Helmut Lachenmann and Quatuor Diotima in the spotlight

The 26th edition of the Messiaen Festival in the Land of Meije took place from July 20 to 28, 2024 in La Grave and partner venues. German composer Helmut Lachenmann was the guest composer for this edition, while the internationally renowned ensemble Quatuor Diotima was the resident ensemble, offering a three-part cycle exploring Lachenmann's instrumental work.

The festival opened with a free concert at the Church of Saint-Théoffrey, entirely dedicated to Olivier Messiaen's Catalogue d'oiseaux, performed on piano by the prestigious Momo Kodama. This edition also featured the world premiere of Sculptures inachevées by Tristan Murail and a new version of Soli by Yan Maresz.

Tributes and discoveries

Tributes were paid to Bruno Ducol, André Jolivet, and Yvonne Loriod, the legendary pianist and wife of Olivier Messiaen. The program also included Mythes et Histoires, a musical cycle exploring the Twelve Labors of Hercules by the ensemble Musicatreize, as well as Rhythm Labyrinth, an intercultural collaboration blending Western and Indian percussion.
