The heritage festival of Fort Dorsner, a military jewel of the Séré de Rivières line in Giromagny
The Giromagny Festival - Fort Dorsner is a heritage and festive event organized within the remarkable Fort Dorsner in Giromagny, built between 1875 and 1879 as part of the Séré de Rivières line. Classified as a historical monument, this pink sandstone fort with an octagonal inner courtyard offers guided tours, night tours with oil lamps, shows, and moments of conviviality in an exceptional military setting at the gateway to the Southern Vosges.
The Fort Dorsner in Giromagny is one of the best-preserved and most remarkable military forts in the Territoire de Belfort. Built between 1875 and 1879 by French military engineers as part of the defensive program of the Séré de Rivières line, developed after the defeat of 1871 to protect France's new borders, this fort occupies a strategic position on the heights overlooking Giromagny (90200) and the Belfort Gap.
Its most remarkable architectural feature is its octagonal-plan inner courtyard, one of the few in France. Built from pink Vosges sandstone, it has a distinctive aesthetic that contrasts with the brick or concrete forts of the same era. Classified as a Historical Monument, it is now managed by the Association du Fort Dorsner, affiliated with the Franchement Forts network.
Each summer and during special events, Fort Dorsner comes alive with a rich program:
Fort Dorsner extends over the commune of Giromagny and partially over that of Auxelles-Bas. From its location, the view offers an exceptional panorama of the Belfort Gap, the Vosges mountains, and, on clear days, the Alpine peaks. This position once allowed for surveillance of movements throughout the region and visual communication with neighboring forts.
Fort Dorsner is part of the Franchement Forts network, which brings together several forts in the Territoire de Belfort open to the public. This networking allows for cross-visits and the promotion of the region's fortified heritage, creating a coherent and rich tourist route.
The Association du Fort Dorsner is the driving force behind the promotion of this monument. Thanks to the commitment of its volunteer members, it ensures the maintenance of the fort, organizes tours, and activities throughout the year. Their passionate work allows this jewel of military heritage to continue to live and be passed on to future generations.
The 2026 Fort Dorsner Festival will offer guided tours, night tours with oil lamps, military exhibitions, and discovery workshops in this remarkable fort, a classified historical monument in Giromagny.
The Fort Dorsner in Giromagny will once again host its grand heritage festival in 2026. The Association du Fort Dorsner is preparing guided tours of the pink sandstone galleries and octagonal courtyard, family activities, and a convivial evening in this exceptional military setting. Full program coming soon on franchementforts.fr.
