Médiévales de Belleperche 2025 — The Middle Ages in the Cistercian Abbey
On September 20th and 21st, 2025, the Cistercian Abbey of Belleperche in Cordes-Tolosannes opened its gardens and spaces to warriors, falconers, and artisans of the Middle Ages for the Médiévales de Belleperche 2025. This free event brought together several historical reenactment groups and hundreds of visitors from all over Tarn-et-Garonne and neighboring departments.
The medieval camps set up in the abbey gardens meticulously recreated medieval military and civilian life: period tents, armor, bladed weapons, field equipment, artisan tools, and kitchen utensils. Costumed guides explained the details of medieval daily life to curious visitors, answering questions from both children and adults.
The sword fighting demonstrations illustrated ancient fencing techniques derived from medieval weapon treatises, combining martial effectiveness with martial aesthetics. HEMA (Historical European Martial Arts) practitioners presented the longsword, rondel dagger, and halberd in commented sequences and choreographed bouts.
The falconry sessions in the abbey gardens featured several raptors in free flight: peregrine falcons, kestrels, and buzzards soared above the abbey lawns, captivating the young audience. The falconers explained the history of this art, inscribed on UNESCO's intangible heritage list, and their daily relationship with their birds.
