An exceptional Christmas in the city of the Champagne Fairs
For over a decade, the Provins Medieval Christmas Market has attracted thousands of visitors each year to the cobbled streets of the upper town. Organized by the association Les Gardes Foires de Champagne, this event transforms Provins' historic squares into a medieval Christmas village where craft demonstrators, period-costumed merchants, and street performers mingle.
Over 80 artisans and merchants in costume
The market extends across several emblematic sites of the medieval city: Place du Châtel, Place Saint-Quiriace, Place du Lavoir, and Rue de l'Ormerie. More than 80 artisans and merchants, all in medieval costumes, offer handcrafted jewelry, pottery, wooden toys, Christmas decorations, period clothing, leather goods, candles, soaps, and local products. Many of them perform demonstrations of their skills—blacksmithing, woodturning, illumination, spinning—reviving almost forgotten crafts before the amazed eyes of the public.
Medieval entertainment and fire shows
Throughout the weekend, the city comes alive with medieval street performances. Jugglers, fire-eaters, stilt walkers, troubadours, and musicians roam the streets, offering spectacular interludes. On Saturday evening, a grand fire show illuminates the ramparts, followed by a medieval ball where locals and visitors dance to the sound of ancient instruments. Knight combats and weapon demonstrations complete the program.
A dedicated space for children
The youngest visitors are not forgotten, with a children's entertainment area offering medieval games, creative workshops, and encounters with costumed characters. Storytellers share legends and tales from the Middle Ages, while medieval encampments set up in the city allow visitors to discover the daily life of knights and artisans.
A magical candlelit atmosphere
What sets the Provins Medieval Christmas Market apart is its unique atmosphere. The streets and squares of the upper town are lit by candlelight, the medieval facades are adorned with decorations evoking the Middle Ages, and the scents of hypocras, spiced mulled wine, and roasted chestnuts fill the cold December air. The whole experience creates a striking journey back in time, blending Christmas magic with medieval authenticity.
