Living history festival from Antiquity to World War II at Gonsans Castle
Au Fil du Temps — Festival of History is a historical reenactment event organized at the Gonsans Castle site, in the Doubs region. This unique festival brings together several reenactment associations representing different historical eras and contexts: the 8th Roman Legion at Alésia, gladiators under Nero, a Celtic tribe, inhabitants of the County of Varais in the 11th century, the Geste Comtoise of the 13th century, Bernese militiamen of the 15th century, soldiers of the 165th Infantry Division of World War I, and GIs of the 3rd Infantry Division who liberated Besançon.
The History Festival “Au Fil du Temps” is a unique event in the Doubs region, offering a true journey through the ages at the Gonsans Castle site. This historical reenactment festival brings together several specialized associations, each representing a specific historical era and context, providing visitors with a living panorama of history from Antiquity to the 20th century.
The historical journey begins with Antiquity. Visitors can encounter the 8th Roman Legion, the very one that fought at Alésia during the Gallic Wars. Gladiators from the time of Nero present spectacular combat demonstrations, while a Celtic tribe revives Gallic traditions through an authentically recreated encampment.
The medieval period is richly represented by the inhabitants of the County of Varais, which corresponds to present-day Franche-Comté in the 11th century. The Geste Comtoise brings the 13th-century Franche-Comté to life, while Bernese militiamen from the 15th century, major players in the Burgundian Wars, demonstrate the military techniques of that turbulent era.
The festival also covers contemporary history with soldiers from the 165th Infantry Division during World War I and GIs from the American 3rd Infantry Division who participated in the liberation of Besançon in 1944. These reenactments help understand the soldiers' combat experience through faithfully recreated encampments.
Au Fil du Temps emphasizes education and historical accuracy. Each association has a conference space and offers tours of its respective encampments. The festival functions as a living museum and an open-air show, featuring a craft market, medieval catering, and refreshment stands, offering an immersive and convivial experience for the whole family.
The "Au Fil du Temps" History Festival is expected in 2026 at Gonsans Castle. This living open-air museum will feature historical reenactments from Antiquity to World War II, with encampments, demonstrations, crafts, and family activities.
The "Au Fil du Temps" History Festival will return to Gonsans Castle in 2026 for a new edition. The festival will feature historical reenactments from Antiquity to the 20th century, with the usual associations and possibly new participants.
Exact dates and the detailed program will be announced later. Gonsans Castle will once again offer its remarkable setting for this immersive journey through the centuries of history.
