Christmas market and magical illuminations in the heart of Montbéliard
In 1987, the Montbéliard Commercial Union (UCM) imagined a year-end holiday celebration inspired by Alsatian Christmas markets, colorful, lively, and warm. A committee comprising the UCM, the Tourist Office, the Festival Committee, and the City of Montbéliard was created to invite artisans around the Saint-Martin temple. This first Christmas market was an immediate success and has been growing ever since.
Today, Les Lumières de Noël de Montbéliard is ranked among the most beautiful Christmas markets in Europe. Approximately 160 chalets are set up in the historic center of Montbéliard, offering a wide range of products:
The city center of Montbéliard is adorned each year with spectacular illuminations that transform the streets and historic buildings into a fairytale setting. The Château des Ducs de Wurtemberg, the Saint-Martin temple, and the facades of the old town are lit up with scenographies renewed each year.
Beyond the market, Les Lumières de Noël offers a rich and varied program of activities:
Each edition highlights a guest region from France, which presents its products and culture in a dedicated space. In 2025, it was the Corrèze region that was honored with the Origine Corrèze operation.
Les Lumières de Noël attracts over 550,000 visitors each year, making it the largest cultural and tourist event in the Pays de Montbéliard and one of the most popular Christmas markets in France.
The 40th edition of the Montbéliard Christmas Lights will take place from November 21 to December 24, 2026. For this anniversary, Switzerland is the guest of honor: the Swiss way of life, its traditions, its gastronomy, its local products, and its craftsmanship will be highlighted throughout the event. Around 170 artisans will set up in the historic center, at the foot of Saint-Martin Temple, Square Sponeck, and Place Velotte.
The Montbéliard Christmas Lights celebrate their 40th edition in 2026, an exceptional anniversary for one of Europe's most beautiful Christmas markets. The event takes place from November 21 to December 24, 2026, in the city's historic center.
After Corrèze in 2025, Switzerland is the guest of honor for this anniversary edition. The market highlights the Swiss way of life: snow-capped peaks, traditions, gastronomy, local products, and artisanal craftsmanship.
Around 170 artisans and creators set up at the foot of Saint-Martin Temple, Square Sponeck, and Place Velotte. You'll find crafts (leather, glass blowing, jewelry, Christmas decorations), a gourmet alley (Montbéliard sausage, Comté cheeses, mulled wine, gingerbread), and a gastronomic area. The outdoor ice rink and numerous activities complete the event.
The old town center is adorned with a constellation of approximately 110,000 LEDs that illuminate the historic monuments — the Château des Ducs de Wurtemberg, Saint-Martin Temple, and the facades of the center — every day from 4:30 PM to 10 PM.
The detailed program of activities and shows for this anniversary edition will be unveiled in autumn 2026 on the official website.
