An authentic and friendly Christmas market at the foot of the Saint-Thiébaut Collegiate Church
Thann, the southern gateway to the Alsace Wine Route, is a small town with exceptional heritage nestled at the foot of the Vosges massif. Its Christmas market, created in 1995, has established itself as one of the most authentic and friendly events in southern Alsace. The setting is magnificent: the Saint-Thiébaut Collegiate Church, a masterpiece of flamboyant Gothic architecture with its 76-meter openwork spire, majestically overlooks the illuminated chalets, creating a postcard-worthy scene.
The market spreads across four squares in the historic center: Place Joffre, Place Saint-Thiébaut, Place de la République, and Place de Lattre de Tassigny. Twenty-five chalets host local artisans, creators, and producers who present their finest creations: handmade Christmas decorations, jewelry, ceramics, candles, carved wooden objects, glassware, and Alsatian textiles. Local producers offer cured meats, mountain cheeses, honey, gingerbread, jams, and the prestigious Rangen de Thann wines, the only Grand Cru classified on volcanic soil in Alsace.
The Thann market stands out for its rich entertainment. An automaton exhibition at the Town Hall delights children with its animated Christmas scenes. Sixteen decorated Christmas trees line the town center, each telling a different story or theme. Santa Claus welcomes children every weekend from 3 PM to 6 PM and on Wednesdays from 4 PM to 6 PM. The Santa Claus's Chest offers artisanal wooden games made in Alsace. Christmas concerts, musical processions, and theater performances punctuate the season.
Throughout the market's duration, the historic buildings of Thann are enhanced by architectural illuminations that highlight the Saint-Thiébaut Collegiate Church, the Witches' Tower, and the facades of the old town. The cobblestone alleys, half-timbered houses, and Renaissance fountains take on a magical dimension under the fairy lights. The Stork Tower and the ruins of Engelbourg Castle, including the famous ruin of the Witch's Eye, watch over the town from the heights.
Thann focuses on a family-friendly and warm, human-scale atmosphere, contrasting with the region's more touristy markets. It is easily accessible by tram-train from Mulhouse in less than 30 minutes, making it an ideal excursion to discover an authentic Alsatian Christmas without the crowds of big cities. The free parking with over 520 spaces near the town center complements this exemplary accessibility.
Thann is located 20 km west of Mulhouse, at the foot of the Vosges mountains.
