The Fabric of Christmas and Rhenish Traditions in the Heart of Southern Alsace
Every year from late November to late December, Place de la Réunion in Mulhouse hosts a unique Christmas market in Alsace, themed around the 'Fabric of Christmas'. This textile tradition, born from Mulhouse's manufacturing heritage, sees an original fabric created each year to adorn the chalets, facades, and streets of the city. Over 90 artisans and creators offer their creations in a warm and authentic atmosphere.
What sets the Mulhouse Christmas Market apart from all other Alsatian markets is its Fabric of Christmas. Each year, an artist is invited to create an original textile pattern that becomes the common thread for the city's festive decorations. This tradition pays homage to the exceptional manufacturing heritage of Mulhouse, the historic capital of textile printing since the 18th century. The fabric adorns the market chalets, the steps of the Town Hall, the fountains, and the pedestrian streets, creating a coherent and refined visual identity.
In 2025, the Fabric of Christmas, named 'Rhinestones', designed by artist Marie-Jo Gebel, celebrated Rhenish traditions and Mulhouse's textile epic. This creation follows the line of patterns inspired by the historical collections preserved at the Mulhouse Museum of Printed Textiles, one of the richest in the world in its field, with over six million textile documents.
The market is set up on the magnificent Place de la Réunion, the historic heart of Mulhouse, dominated by the Temple Saint-Étienne, a masterpiece of Rhenish Gothic architecture, and the Renaissance Town Hall, adorned with trompe-l'oeil frescoes. The wooden chalets, dressed in the year's fabric, host over 90 artisans and creators, mostly from Alsace and neighboring regions. The Fabric Boutique, located on the ground floor of the Town Hall (Historical Museum), offers the year's fabric in the form of objects and accessories.
The selected artisans offer a wide range of creations: Christmas decorations, jewelry, ceramics, wooden objects, textiles, glassware, and gourmet specialties. The food stalls offer Alsatian Christmas essentials: bredele, gingerbread, mulled wine with spices, flammekueche, and the famous Männele (little man-shaped brioches). The market extends to Place des Cordiers and Square de la Bourse with additional activities.
The Mulhouse Christmas Market offers a rich program of entertainment throughout the season: children's shows, concerts, creative workshops, a Christmas train, and festive illuminations that transform the city center into a fairy-tale village. The historic facades of Place de la Réunion, enhanced by light displays, offer an unforgettable spectacle at dusk.
The 2026 edition of the Mulhouse Christmas Market will take place from late November to late December on Place de la Réunion. A new Fabric of Christmas will be unveiled to dress the city in festive colors, with over 90 artisans, entertainment, and magical illuminations.
