The authentic Christmas market in the heart of one of France's most beautiful villages
Every year from late November to late December, the medieval town of Eguisheim, ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, is adorned with lights and magical decorations to host its authentic Christmas market. Around thirty carefully selected artisans and creators offer their creations in the village's concentric streets, at the foot of the Counts' castle. Labeled "Cities and Villages of Christmas" since 2019, this market captivates with its intimate charm and living Alsatian traditions.
Eguisheim, voted "Favorite Village of the French" in 2013 and ranked among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, offers an exceptional setting for its Christmas market. Its unique concentric streets in Europe, lined with colorful half-timbered houses and sculpted fountains, form an enchanting backdrop when adorned with Advent illuminations. The village received the prestigious "Cities and Villages of Christmas" label in 2019, recognizing the quality and authenticity of its festivities.
The Eguisheim Christmas Market focuses on authenticity and rigorous selection of its exhibitors. Around thirty wooden chalets host artisans and creators offering handmade products: traditional Christmas decorations, wooden toys, artisanal jewelry, scented candles, Alsatian pottery, and textiles. For gastronomy, local specialties are featured: bredele, gingerbread, mulled wine with spices, foie gras, farm-fresh Munster cheese, and Alsace Grand Crus from the surrounding vineyards.
What sets Eguisheim apart from other Alsatian markets are its Christmas cellars. The village's winegrowers open their historic vaulted cellars to offer tastings of their best vintages in a warm and intimate atmosphere. It's an opportunity to discover the great Alsace wines — Gewurztraminer, Riesling, Pinot Gris — directly from the producer, in a remarkable heritage setting.
The program of events marks the entire Advent season. The Night Watchman, an emblematic figure in period costume, guides visitors through the village streets to the sound of the accordion, telling legends and the history of Eguisheim. Every evening, a window of the giant Advent calendar opens on the Château square. The St. Lucia procession with the Christkindel and its angels is one of the most moving moments of the season. Christmas treasure hunts are organized for children through the medieval streets.
Eguisheim is the cradle of Alsatian vineyards, with a winemaking tradition dating back to Roman times. Located just 5 km south of Colmar, the village is surrounded by two Grand Crus — Eichberg and Pfersigberg — which are among the most renowned in Alsace. This combination of medieval heritage, wine tradition, and Christmas magic makes Eguisheim a must-visit destination on the Alsace Wine Route during the holidays.
The 2026 edition of the Eguisheim Christmas Market will take place from late November to late December in the concentric streets of the medieval village. Around thirty artisans and creators will offer their authentic products, accompanied by traditional events: Night Watchman's rounds, Christmas cellars, and a giant Advent calendar.
Eguisheim is located 5 km south of Colmar, on the Alsace Wine Route.
