Bergheim, an exceptional winegrowing jewel

Bergheim is one of the few Alsatian towns to have retained almost all of its 14th-century medieval fortifications. Surrounded by ramparts, towers, and fortified gates, this small town with character is also one of the highlights of Alsatian vineyards, notably the prestigious Grand Cru Altenberg de Bergheim, a terroir of excellence renowned for its remarkably complex Gewurztraminer, Riesling, and Pinot Gris.

Gewurztraminer, the king grape variety

Gewurztraminer is the most expressive and aromatic grape variety in Alsace. Recognizable by its intense nose of lychee, rose, spices, and exotic fruits, it produces generous and powerful wines that wonderfully complement Alsatian gastronomy, from foie gras to desserts and blue cheeses. The Bergheim Gewurztraminer Festival pays a festive and popular tribute to it every year.

A weekend of festivities

The festival unfolds over two days around Place du Docteur Pierre Walter, the historic heart of the town. On Saturday evening, from 7 p.m., a grand guinguette dance transforms the square into an open-air dance floor, in a warm and friendly atmosphere. The orchestra leads the dancers until the early hours of the morning under lanterns and fairy lights.

Tastings and terroir discovery

On Sunday morning, from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m., Bergheim winegrowers offer guided wine tastings, allowing visitors to discover the different terroirs of the commune and the subtleties of each vintage. An aperitif-concert accompanies these tastings in a relaxed atmosphere. Conferences on the different terroirs of Bergheim complete this oenological morning for informed amateurs.

The float parade, a highlight of the festival

On Sunday at 2:45 p.m., the traditional float parade winds through the streets of the fortified town. Decorated floats, accompanied by music bands and Alsatian folk groups in traditional costumes, parade through the medieval alleys to the applause of the public. This colorful and festive procession is the highlight of the festival and demonstrates the attachment of Bergheim's inhabitants to their traditions.

Flea market and entertainment

On Sunday, a traditional flea market sets up in the town's streets, offering bargain hunters many finds. Musical entertainment, food stalls offering Alsatian specialties, and a village festival atmosphere complete this weekend dedicated to wine and conviviality.
