Bravade de Fréjus - 2025 Edition
The Bravade de Fréjus took place on Sunday, May 11, 2025, the 3rd Sunday after Easter, in the historic center of the episcopal and Roman city. Thousands of spectators — residents of Fréjus, pilgrims, and tourists — gathered to witness this patronal procession, one of the oldest and most moving in the Var region.
The day began with a solemn mass in the Romanesque Cathédrale Saint-Léonce, in the presence of the bravadeurs in red and white costume and representatives of civil and military authorities. After the mass, the procession formed on Place Formigé, with the statue of Saint Francis of Paola carried on shoulders by the faithful. The Compagnies des Bravadeurs, muskets on their shoulders, escorted the statue through the cobbled alleys of old Fréjus, firing resounding black powder salvos in front of religious buildings and at symbolic crossroads along the route.
The municipal band, local elected officials, representatives of patriotic associations, and many families in traditional costumes completed the procession. The procession route, punctuated by the detonations of the muskets and the cheers of the crowd, crossed the historic districts of Fréjus before returning to the cathedral for the final blessing. Popular entertainment — refreshment stands, Provençal food, craft stalls — enlivened the areas around the cathedral throughout the day.
