150 km heritage circuit to discover the fortified churches of the 16th-17th centuries and summer concerts in the Ardennes Thiérache
The Circuit of Fortified Churches of Thiérache is a 150 km tourist and cultural route through the Ardennes Thiérache, between Signy-le-Petit and Charleville-Mézières. It allows you to discover about sixty fortified churches from the 16th and 17th centuries, a unique heritage in France born from the need to protect populations during the incessant wars from the Hundred Years' War to the 17th century. Each summer, concerts are organized in these buildings with remarkable acoustics, and the European Heritage Days in September offer exceptional openings.
The Circuit of Fortified Churches of Thiérache offers a fascinating dive into the turbulent history of this border region of the Ardennes. Over 150 kilometers, in about twenty stages, the route allows you to discover about sixty fortified churches built between the 16th and 17th centuries, constituting a heritage ensemble without equal in France. These singular buildings, combining religious architecture and military defense, bear witness to the centuries of conflicts that ravaged Thiérache, a constantly threatened border territory from the Hundred Years' War to the wars of the 17th century.
The fortified churches of Thiérache are recognizable by their impressive defensive elements: corner towers, keeps, murder holes, machicolations, and crenellations give these places of worship a fortress-like appearance. Local populations, deprived of the protection of a lordly castle, transformed their churches into refuges during invasions. The upper parts, often in brick, housed refuge rooms where villagers could retreat with provisions and livestock. The church of Signy-le-Petit, with its square bell tower flanked by two corner turrets, is one of the most emblematic on the circuit.
The circuit winds through the rolling landscapes of the Ardennes Thiérache, passing through villages with preserved charm. Among the most remarkable stages are:
Each summer, several fortified churches on the circuit host classical and baroque music concerts. The exceptional acoustics of these stone and brick buildings, with their ogival vaults, offer a remarkable soundscape for performers. Organists, pianists, vocal and instrumental ensembles perform in these historic places, creating a unique experience combining architectural heritage and live music. These summer concerts contribute to the enhancement and animation of these buildings, attracting music lovers and heritage enthusiasts.
The European Heritage Days, in September, are a highlight of the circuit. Many churches usually closed open their doors to the public, with guided tours led by passionate volunteers who retrace the history of these buildings and of Thiérache. Exhibitions, conferences, and activities complete the program, offering a unique opportunity to enter these fortresses of faith and understand the daily life of the populations who took refuge there in times of war.
The circuit traditionally starts in Signy-le-Petit (08380), but can be joined from any stage.
