A 15th-Century Castle, Showcase for the Fantastic Bestiary

The Château de la Trémolière, built in the 15th century, was the seat of a lordship belonging to the Montclar family. Located in Anglards-de-Salers, in the Pays de Salers, this historic castle houses an exceptional heritage treasure: ten 16th-century Aubusson tapestries, known as "Le Bestiaire Fantastique" (The Fantastic Bestiary). These verdure tapestries, rediscovered in the early 20th century by the parish priest and recently restored, represent a unique collection of fantastic creatures and plant motifs of great iconographic richness.

Classified as a Historic Monument, the castle is surrounded by a "Verger de Déduit" (pleasure garden), a recreated medieval garden that complements the visit. The ensemble constitutes a major heritage site in Cantal, attracting history, art, and nature lovers every year.

Summer Exhibitions: Contemporary Art in Dialogue with Heritage

Since 2011, the "Summer Exhibitions of the Château de la Trémolière" series has invited a renowned contemporary artist each year to exhibit their work in the castle's halls for a summer solo exhibition. The principle is to create a dialogue between contemporary creation and the Aubusson tapestries of the Fantastic Bestiary, generating unexpected resonances between ancient art and today's art.

Over the years, major artists have exhibited in this exceptional setting, including Henri Cueco (first edition in 2011), Georges Rousse, and Samuel Rousseau. Each exhibition is designed specifically for the location, with artists occupying the various castle rooms, taking into account the presence of the tapestries and the medieval architecture.

15th Edition 2025: KRIKI

For the 15th edition (2025), the castle hosted a solo exhibition by KRIKI, featuring oil paintings on canvas and colored pencil drawings on paper. Kriki's universe, fueled by his past as a graffiti artist, his punk attitude, his passion for the plant world, human migrations, and their folklore, resonates deeply with the castle's halls and the Aubusson tapestries. His emblematic and allegorical characters, staged in enigmatic roles, engage in a dialogue with the mythology of the Fantastic Bestiary.

A Complete Visitor Experience

A visit to the Château de la Trémolière allows you to discover the Aubusson tapestries, the summer's contemporary art exhibition, and the "Verger de Déduit", a medieval-inspired garden. Guided tours and cultural mediation activities are offered, particularly for school groups, helping to introduce younger generations to contemporary art and heritage.

The castle is located in a remarkable natural setting, between the Monts du Cantal and the Maronne valley, near Salers, one of France's most beautiful villages. The visit can be combined with the discovery of the rich heritage of the Pays de Salers: turreted houses, Romanesque churches, "burons" (traditional mountain huts), and alpine pastures.
