The great hunting and nature gathering in the heart of Cantal
Every summer in July, the medieval town of Salers in Cantal hosts the Fête de la Chasse et de la Nature, an exceptional gathering dedicated to hunting, wildlife, and rural traditions. On the program: presentation of over 150 hunting dogs, falconry show with golden eagle, ball-trap, archery, fishing initiation, exhibition on Cantal's fauna, and a Saint Hubert mass accompanied by the hunting horns of the Débuché du Cantal.
In the heart of the Pays de Salers, in the magnificent setting of this medieval village classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France, the Fête de la Chasse et de la Nature brings together hundreds of nature, hunting, and rural traditions enthusiasts every summer. Born from the merger of three local hunting societies—those of Fontanges, Saint-Paul-de-Salers, and Salers—this event has become a must-attend for lovers of the canine world and Cantal's nature.
One of the main attractions of the festival is the canine presentation, which brings together over 150 hunting dogs of all breeds: hounds, pointers, retrievers, terriers, and bloodhounds. Breeders and dog handlers present their animals, explain the specificities of each breed, and demonstrate their hunting skills. This gathering is one of the most important canine hunting presentations in the Auvergne region.
The falconry show is a highlight of the day. Professional falconers present their birds of prey, including the majestic golden eagle, in spectacular free-flight demonstrations. Birds of prey soar above the spectators' heads, offering a fascinating spectacle that delights young and old alike. A permanent exhibition of birds of prey also allows for close observation of these birds and learning more about their biology and role in the ecosystem.
The festival offers numerous sporting and recreational activities related to the natural world. Ball-trap allows experienced shooters and novices alike to try clay pigeon shooting. Archery stands are open to all, including children. Fishing initiation introduces youngsters to the joys of river fishing in an exceptional natural setting along the Cantal rivers.
The day traditionally begins with the Saint Hubert mass, patron saint of hunters, celebrated in the Saint-Mathieu church of Salers. This solemn ceremony is accompanied by the hunting horn players of the Débuché du Cantal, whose calls resonate under the vaults of the Romanesque building. This mass perpetuates a centuries-old tradition and gives the festival a deep spiritual and heritage dimension.
An exhibition dedicated to the fauna of Cantal showcases the richness of local biodiversity: deer, roe deer, wild boar, foxes, badgers, and numerous bird species. Stands run by specialized associations—underground hunting, big game hunting, bloodhound handlers, vermin trappers—allow visitors to discover various hunting practices. Artisans and professional exhibitors also offer hunting, fishing, and outdoor equipment in the village streets.
The Fête de la Chasse et de la Nature is a friendly and family-oriented event. A barbecue and a country meal provide an opportunity for enthusiasts to share a convivial moment. Children have specific activities with archery and fishing initiations. The evening continues with a festive meal accompanied by an orchestra. Entry to the festival is open to all in a warm and relaxed atmosphere, in the heart of the natural and architectural heritage of the Pays de Salers.
