About Horizons Sancy

Created in 2007, Horizons Arts-Nature en Sancy is an open-air contemporary art event that unfolds every summer in the Massif du Sancy. Throughout the summer, 10 monumental works by international artists are installed in the heart of a forest, on a waterfall, or at the summit of a 'puy', engaging in dialogue with the remarkable landscapes of the Grand Site de France. Horizons Sancy — edition 2026

The 20th edition of Horizons Arts-Nature en Sancy runs from June 20 to September 27, 2026, celebrating two decades of monumental art installations set within the stunning landscapes of the Massif du Sancy. Ten original works, selected from 280 submissions by artists from 36 countries, are displayed across ten natural sites in the volcanic massif: Compains, Picherande, Murol, Le Vernet-Sainte-Marguerite, Valbeleix, Montgreleix, Saint-Pierre-Colamine, La Bourboule, Chastreix, and Murat-le-Quaire. All installations are free to visit, 24/7, accessible via marked trails and guided paths using the Mhikes app.

20th Anniversary — June 20 to September 27, 2026

Horizons “Arts-Nature” en Sancy is blowing out 20 candles, once again transforming the Massif du Sancy into a vast canvas for artistic creation. For this special edition, ten artists are installing their monumental works across ten natural sites in the Auvergne volcanic massif from June 20 to September 27, 2026—an extended season compared to previous years.

The ten selected creations were chosen from 280 submissions by artists from 36 countries for their uniqueness, their message, and how they enhance the natural landscapes that host them. Over 200,000 visitors are expected throughout the season.

The 10 Works of the 2026 Edition

  • 1. Une Sentinelle — Olivier Thomas (France), in Compains. A 4m monumental figure wrapped in a dark, organic coat made of wood, recycled truck inner tubes, and aluminum. A subtle opening allows visitors to step inside.
  • 2. Le Géant du Souffle — Wilfried De Cock (Belgium), in Picherande. A 2.5m kneeling colossus made of corten steel and wood, composed of thousands of openwork flowers; its open hands welcome visitors to sit. Inspired by the legend of the “Good Giant who loved flowers.”
  • 3. Le Repos — Nora Simon (France), in Murol. A young shepherd lying against a traditional stone hut (buron), 3.5m long, made of wood and recycled paper, inspired by a painting by Swedish artist Amalia Lindegren. A tribute to the memory of the buronniers.
  • 4. Paysage Respirant — Réka Szabo (Romania), in Le Vernet-Sainte-Marguerite. A 4m tall stylized lung made of wood and metal, whose scales open and close with the wind, as if the installation were breathing.
  • 5. Aquila Serta — Jérémy Labarre (France), in Valbeleix. A massive 3.6m bird of prey nest made of solid wood and black cork, where humans feel tiny. A tribute to the raptors of the Sancy.
  • 6. À la Dérive — G'Dal (Gilles Gabry) & Winoxsculpt (Sébastien Fargueta) (France), in Montgreleix. A 4m polygonal stainless steel sculpture, visible from 360°: a mother polar bear and her cub stranded on a piece of ice that has drifted to the Sancy.
  • 7. L'Étreinte — Antoine Janot (France), in Saint-Pierre-Colamine. A 6m fairy-tale tree made from dead oak trunks twisted together to form a living knot, evoking the solidarity of nature.
  • 8. Les Gardiens du Sancy — Rodolfo Liprandi (France), in La Bourboule. Two large 3m tall and 4m long mouflons, made of natural branches assembled exclusively with screws, without glue or synthetic materials.
  • 9. Loup — Matthew Burton (France), in Chastreix. A 4m giant wolf made of Douglas fir and vine roots, howling at the top of a volcanic hill, inspired by the local “Wolf of Courlande” legend.
  • 10. L'Offrande — Acelya Toker & Maud Dubray (France), in Murat-le-Quaire. Three giant wooden flowers, 8, 5, and 2 meters in diameter, created by two students in event scenography.

An 11th Participatory Work for the 20th Anniversary

In addition to the ten creations, an eleventh participatory work is being crafted by hundreds of “artists for a day.” Made of natural materials, it bears the human traces and messages left by everyone, embodying cooperation, ecology, and the sensitive bond between humans and nature. It will take shape during a grand festive weekend at Super-Besse, at the puy de Chambourguet, on Saturday, July 18 and Sunday, July 19, 2026, featuring entertainment, concerts, and a giant picnic.

Horizons in Paris and for Kids

Extending the open-air exhibition, the Orangerie du Sénat at the Jardin du Luxembourg in Paris will host the exhibition “Horizons Arts-Nature en Sancy – 20 years of monumental creations” from July 31 to August 11, 2026, with free admission daily. Two decades of ephemeral installations will be highlighted through photographs and a unique scenography designed by students from the Clermont-Ferrand “Arts and Design” program.

For younger audiences, Little Horizons offers original games around the artworks, surprises, and a reward, which can be found on the map distributed at Sancy tourist offices. Each year, an artistic project is also carried out by local school children with two local visual artists and exhibited in exceptional natural sites.

Practical Information

Finding the artworks

The artworks are scattered across several municipalities in the Massif du Sancy, each at the end of a marked trail: it is best to plan your route before setting off. Two official, free tools are available:

  • The artwork location map — downloadable as a PDF at horizons-sancy.com and available at all Massif du Sancy tourist offices. This map includes the numbering for the artworks and the "Little Horizons" games.
  • The Mhikes mobile app (free, on the App Store and Play Store) — it offers "Horizons walks" as geolocated routes, featuring voice guidance, landscape interpretation, and artist interviews. Download before you leave: the guidance works offline using GPS, which is essential in a mountain range where mobile coverage is often spotty.

On-site, dedicated signage complements these tools at the start of each location.

Access

The artworks are spread throughout the Massif du Sancy. Each site is accessible via marked hiking trails.

By car: The Massif du Sancy is accessible from Clermont-Ferrand via the D983 and then the D996 (about 50 minutes to Le Mont-Dore). Parking is available at the trailheads. Allow about 2 hours 30 minutes from Lyon, 3 hours 30 minutes from Montpellier or Bordeaux, 4 hours 30 minutes from Nantes, and 5 hours from Paris.

Prices

Access is completely free. Each site is open to the public at any time of day.

Recommended gear

Bring suitable hiking shoes, water, and sun protection. The trails vary in difficulty, from family-friendly paths to athletic hikes: some artworks are just a few minutes' walk from a parking lot, while others require climbing a "puy" (volcanic peak).

With children

Little Horizons offers original games for younger visitors centered around the artworks, with surprises and a reward at the end: the route is marked directly on the map available at tourist offices. Each year, local schoolchildren also create their own works with two local visual artists, which are also exhibited in natural sites throughout the massif.

Vote for your favorite artwork

Horizons Arts-Nature en Sancy: When Art Dialogues with Nature

Since 2007, Horizons Arts-Nature en Sancy has transformed the Massif du Sancy into an open-air art gallery. Every summer, 10 monumental contemporary artworks are installed in remarkable natural sites—forests, waterfalls, 'puys'—creating a unique dialogue between artistic creation and the grandiose landscapes of this Grand Site de France.

A Unique Concept in France

The principle of Horizons is simple and powerful: each year, invite international artists to create ephemeral works that resonate with the natural sites hosting them. Each artist chooses a location in the Massif du Sancy and installs a creation that dialogues with the landscape, light, vegetation, and terrain. The works are freely accessible, integrated into hiking routes.

10 Works in 10 Sites

Each edition features 10 works spread across 10 different sites in the Massif du Sancy:

  • Deep beech and fir forests
  • The massif's waterfalls and rivers
  • Volcanic summits and 'puys'
  • High-altitude meadows and pastures
  • Glacial valleys and plateaus

A Free and Accessible Event

Horizons Arts-Nature is completely free. Each site is freely accessible at any time of day and integrated into marked hiking trails. This total accessibility allows as many people as possible to discover the works during walks in the massif, at their own pace.

A Committed Vision

Initiated by Luc Stelly and supported by the Sancy Tourist Office, Horizons is part of an initiative that questions the relationship between humans, art, and nature. The creations engage with contemporary environmental issues, inviting visitors to see the surrounding landscapes with fresh eyes.

2026: 20 Years of Creation in Nature

The 2026 edition will mark an important anniversary: 20 years of monumental creations in the Massif du Sancy. To celebrate this event, a retrospective exhibition "Horizons Arts-Nature en Sancy — 20 Years of Monumental Creations" will be presented at the Orangerie du Sénat in the Luxembourg Garden in Paris, from July 31 to August 11, 2026.
