About La Transvolcanique
La Transvolcanique — edition 2026
The 35th edition of the Transvolcanique connects Blanzat to Le Mont-Dore on September 19–20, 2026, through the Chaîne des Puys and the Sancy massif: approximately 85 km and 2,200 m of elevation gain each day, heading out on Saturday and returning on Sunday. Routes are no longer marked and must be followed via GPS. Registration, which opened on May 13 and was limited to 1,100 participants, is now closed.
35th edition — September 19 and 20, 2026
On Saturday, waves depart from the Blanzat stadium between 8:30 AM and 9:10 AM to reach Le Mont-Dore, near the ice rink. On Sunday, the return trip starts at 8:30 AM from Le Mont-Dore or La Bourboule, depending on your accommodation. The Fédération française de cyclotourisme reports approximately 85 km and 2,200 m of elevation gain per day, with one or two long variants for those looking for extra distance.
Routes are no longer marked
This is the major change for this year. After several trial editions on the long variants, the organization is standardizing GPS navigation: there is no signage on the ground, and each participant must ride with a GPS device loaded with the GPX track. Files are made available to account leaders the week before the ride, and it is their responsibility to pass them on to the participants they registered. A route map is provided with the packets on Saturday morning.
Registration closed
Registration opened on May 13, 2026, at 6:00 PM, online only, and was limited to 1,100 participants according to the Fédération française de cyclotourisme. As of August 17, 2026, the official website states that registration is closed for this edition.

La Transvolcanique: A two-day mountain bike trek between Blanzat and Le Mont-Dore
Organized by the cycling section of the Foyer Rural de Blanzat, La Transvolcanique is a non-competitive community event designed to showcase the Auvergne region by mountain bike. This is not a race: everyone rides at their own pace and is responsible for their own safety on paths and road sections that remain open to traffic.
The Route
Over the course of two days, participants traverse the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, primarily using unpaved trails:
- Day 1: Blanzat to Le Mont-Dore, approximately 85 km through the Chaîne des Puys and the Sancy massif.
- Day 2: Le Mont-Dore to Blanzat, approximately 85 km.
The route starts in Blanzat at an altitude of 400 m, winding through vineyards and orchards on the outskirts of Clermont-Ferrand, climbs to 1,400 m in the Chaîne des Puys, and reaches Le Mont-Dore in the Sancy massif. The terrain is a mix of wide tracks, single-track trails, and some technical sections. One or two longer variants are available. The French Cyclotouring Federation estimates about 2,200 m of elevation gain per day and classifies La Transvolcanique as suitable for experienced mountain bikers due to the distance and moderate technical difficulty.
Volunteer-Run
La Transvolcanique is entirely organized by volunteers from the cycling section of the Foyer Rural de Blanzat. Registration includes several refreshment stops with a hot, sit-down lunch, luggage transport between the start and finish, a souvenir gift, a half-pint of beer at the finish line, a raffle, and a closing reception. Since 2026, the routes are no longer marked; they are navigated via GPS using GPX files provided by the organizers.
Eco-Friendly Commitment
As an eco-conscious partner of the Parc Naturel Régional des Volcans d'Auvergne, La Transvolcanique works to minimize waste: reusable rigid cups are provided to every participant, disposable cups are banned at refreshment stations, and the event emphasizes waste sorting, local and unpackaged products, and carpooling. Course scouting, opening, and closing are all done without motorized vehicles. The route is planned in coordination with the Volcans Park authority, the ONF, and local landowner associations—specifically the ASL Puy de Dôme Grand Sault and Côme-Balmet-Suchet-Souis—who kindly authorize passage through private land for the duration of the event.
A National-Scale Event
With between 1,000 and 1,600 participants depending on the year, La Transvolcanique attracts mountain bikers from all over France and abroad, particularly from Belgium. It is the largest two-day mass-participation mountain bike event in France.
