About Sacred Art of Couserans

The Festival of Sacred Art of Couserans and Ariège is a cultural and spiritual event that takes place annually around the Ascension holiday, in the second half of May, in Saint-Lizier and in the sacred buildings of Couserans. Founded in 1994, this festival offers concerts, recitals, dramatic interpretations, exhibitions and conferences in exceptional locations such as the Cathedral of Saint-Lizier, adorned with Romanesque frescoes from the 11th and 12th centuries, and the Abbey of Combelongue. The sacred in all its artistic forms — music, song, art, theater — is at the heart of this event which combines artistic emotion and discovery of the Romanesque heritage of the Pyrenean foothills.

The sacred in all its artistic forms

The Festival of Sacred Art of Couserans and Ariège is a unique cultural and spiritual gathering, born in 1994 from the desire to create a dialogue between art and the sacred in the most prestigious buildings of Couserans, a former historical province of Ariège. Each year, around the Ascension holiday, the festival takes over the Cathedral of Saint-Lizier, the Romanesque churches of Haut-Salat, and the Abbey of Combelongue to offer concerts, recitals, dramatic interpretations, exhibitions, and conferences where the sacred is explored in all its artistic dimensions.

The Cathedral of Saint-Lizier, an exceptional setting

The heart of the festival beats in the Cathedral of Saint-Lizier, a jewel of Pyrenean Romanesque art, a UNESCO World Heritage site as part of the Routes of Santiago de Compostela. Its Romanesque frescoes from the 11th and 12th centuries, among the best-preserved in the South of France, provide a setting of striking beauty for sacred music concerts. The Abbey of Combelongue, the Romanesque churches of Haut-Salat, and other religious buildings in Couserans complete this unique artistic and heritage tour.

A program combining music, theater, and reflection

The program of the Festival of Sacred Art is intended to be multidisciplinary and open: sacred and secular music, choral singing, instrumental recitals, theatrical interpretations of sacred texts, contemporary art exhibitions, and conferences on religious heritage make up a rich and varied program. The festival hosts national and international renowned artists, while maintaining a human dimension that fosters sharing and communion between the public and artists in these places steeped in history and spirituality.

Thirty years of cultural and spiritual influence

Since its creation in 1994, the Festival of Sacred Art of Couserans has established itself as a reference event in the cultural landscape of Ariège and Occitanie. By offering moderate prices and using exceptional heritage sites, it allows a wide audience to discover the richness of the Romanesque heritage of Couserans while experiencing intense moments of artistic emotion. The association Festival d'Art Sacré du Couserans, which organizes the event, works throughout the year to keep alive this tradition of dialogue between art, the sacred, and heritage.
