Festival around plants, Pyrenean heritage and autonomy in Saint-Lizier
Journées Sorcières is a unique festival held every last weekend of October in the medieval village of Saint-Lizier, in Ariège. Created in 2019 by the Association Journées Sorcières, this event celebrates knowledge of local plants, Gascon-Pyrenean heritage, and the concept of autonomy. For two days, the village hosts a market of local artisans and producers, conferences, botanical walks, workshops on plants, and concerts, all in an inclusive, eco-responsible spirit rooted in the Pyrenean territory. Free admission.
The Journées Sorcières are an atypical festival that takes over the medieval village of Saint-Lizier, in Ariège, every autumn. Created in 2019 by the Association Journées Sorcières, this event explores three closely linked themes: the knowledge of local and endemic Pyrenean plants, Gascon-Pyrenean heritage—that is, the cultural legacy passed down by women—and the concept of autonomy. Far from clichés, the festival offers a serious, documented, and benevolent approach to these subjects, in a festive atmosphere open to all.
The Journées Sorcières program is rich and varied. A market of artisans and local producers committed to ethical and eco-responsible practices takes over the streets and the forecourt of the Hôtel-Dieu in Saint-Lizier. Free conferences bring together specialists in ethnobotany, the history of medicinal plants, ecofeminism, and Pyrenean heritage. Guided botanical walks allow participants to discover the local and endemic flora of the Pyrenees, while small-group autonomy workshops teach practical skills related to plants.
Journées Sorcières is not limited to plants and heritage. The festival features concerts and live performances, with a program highlighting female artists from the Occitanie region. Activities for children and teenagers are specifically designed to address the festival's themes in a fun and accessible way. The 5th edition in 2024, themed "History, stories," was held on October 26 and 27 with a particularly rich program.
Journées Sorcières is distinguished by its eco-responsible commitment, certified at the blue level of the "Événement Vert" label. The festival prioritizes short supply chains, local producers, waste reduction, and the promotion of local know-how. Admission is free, conferences are open access, and the entire event is designed to be inclusive and accessible to all audiences. A model of sustainable cultural event in the heart of the Pyrenean foothills.
