Celebration of the Pyrenean draft horse in Val d'Azun
The Fête du Cheval de Trait is an agricultural and festive event dedicated to the breeding of draft horses, a centuries-old tradition of the Val d'Azun in the Hautes-Pyrénées. Created in 1998 in Aucun, it had fourteen editions before merging in 2015 with the Foire aux Côtelettes to become "Terre de Montagne", the agricultural fair of Val d'Azun organized in Arrens-Marsous. The event showcases draft horse breeds (Comtois, Breton, Ardennais, Auxois, Percheron) through competitions organized by the Haras Nationaux de Tarbes, equestrian shows, a professional exhibition, carriage rides, and agricultural activities with over 200 animals.
The draft horse is inseparable from the agricultural history of the Val d'Azun. Since 1998, this festival has celebrated this emblematic animal of the Pyrenean mountains through draft horse competitions organized by the Haras Nationaux de Tarbes, pitting the Comtois, Breton, Ardennais, Auxois, and Percheron breeds against each other.
After fourteen editions in Aucun, the Fête du Cheval de Trait merged in 2015 with the Foire aux Côtelettes to give birth to "Terre de Montagne", the agricultural fair of Val d'Azun organized in Arrens-Marsous. This new event expands the program to include cattle, sheep, goats, and poultry, while keeping equestrian shows and horse competitions at the heart of the programming.
Over three days in October, the event offers a professional exhibition, carriage rides, hikes, horse work demonstrations, a large open-air farm with over 200 animals, concerts and Pyrenean musical entertainment, as well as meals and dancing evenings.
Terre de Montagne 2026 celebrates the draft horse and mountain agriculture in Arrens-Marsous with competitions, shows, and activities for the whole family.
