A centuries-old fair in the heart of Couserans
The Foire aux Chevaux et aux Anes de Saint-Girons is a centuries-old institution in Couserans. For generations, breeders from the Pyrenean valleys have converged on the Foirail in Saint-Girons on January 2nd and November 2nd to present and trade their finest animals. This tradition, dating back several centuries, is so closely linked to the town that the Castillonnais horse—a local breed originating from the Biros valley—also bears the nickname "Saint-Gironnais", in reference to the large fairs where it was traditionally traded.
Three emblematic Pyrenean breeds
The fair honors the three emblematic equine breeds of the Ariège Pyrenees:
- The Castillonnais horse, a small, robust, and enduring mountain horse, originating from the Biros valley in the extreme southwest of Ariège. A rare and protected breed, it is recognizable by its dark bay coat and abundant mane.
- The Merens horse, a majestic black breed from the high Ariège region, used for centuries for mountain work and now prized for recreational riding.
- The Pyrenean donkey, the historic companion of shepherds and muleteers in the Pyrenees, whose conservation is an important heritage issue.
Competitions, presentations, and know-how
Each edition of the fair features model and gait competitions for the various breeds, harness presentations, mountain use demonstrations, and exchanges between breeders. Visitors can admire the finest specimens of local breeds, chat with passionate breeders who perpetuate these breeding traditions, and discover the history and characteristics of each breed. Local produce and craft stands complete the atmosphere of this traditional fair.
A living heritage to preserve
The Foire aux Chevaux et aux Anes de Saint-Girons is more than just a commercial event; it is a living heritage that testifies to the historical importance of horse breeding in the Pyrenees. At a time when these local breeds are threatened by agricultural modernization, the fair actively contributes to their conservation and promotion. The breeder associations for Castillonnais, Merens, and Pyrenean donkeys work together to ensure the sustainability of these breeds, true treasures of the natural and cultural heritage of the Pyrenees.
