The fig in all its forms in Mas-d'Azil
The Fig Festival of Mas-d'Azil is a gastronomic and festive event that celebrates the fig and the fig tree every first weekend of October, in this Ariège village with exceptional heritage. Created in 2002, this festival brings together over 100 exhibitors — producers, artisans, brotherhoods — around a gourmet and artisanal market, a fig jam competition, street shows, music, and dance. A friendly and popular gathering in the heart of the Arize and Lèze valleys.
The Fig Festival of Mas-d'Azil was born in 2002 from the desire to celebrate an emblematic fruit of this Ariège village located at the crossroads of Mediterranean and Pyrenean influences. Mas-d'Azil, known worldwide for its monumental prehistoric cave, is also a terroir of fig trees that benefit from the favorable microclimate of the Arize and Lèze valleys. For over twenty years, this festival has honored the fig in all its forms: fresh, dried, in jam, in marmalade, in pastries, as a savory accompaniment with cheese or foie gras.
The heart of the Fig Festival is its gourmet and artisanal market, which brings together over 100 exhibitors in the village streets and squares every year. Fig producers and those of derivative products, artisan creators, gastronomic brotherhoods, and local associations animate this colorful and fragrant market. You can taste the fig in new and surprising forms, raw or cooked, sweet or savory, accompanied by cheese or foie gras. The stand of the Maison de la Figue, offered by the association Effets Nature, provides an educational showcase on fig tree varieties and cultivation techniques.
One of the highlights of the festival is the fig jam and marmalade competition, open to both amateurs and professionals. Participants present their creations, judged by a jury of connoisseurs on criteria of taste, texture, originality, and presentation. This competition highlights the know-how of producers and enthusiasts, while stimulating creativity around the fig. Gastronomic brotherhoods, from all over the region, participate in a procession and inductions that add a solemn and festive dimension to the event.
The Fig Festival is more than just a market: it is a true village festival. Street shows, burlesque and quirky, liven up the market aisles. Concerts punctuate the two days, from jazz to folk to traditional Occitan music. Dancers and acrobats add a touch of fantasy, while the oyster bar allows you to enjoy seafood in the heart of Ariège. The atmosphere is warm, relaxed, and family-friendly, reflecting the spirit of the village of Mas-d'Azil.
