Occitan culture festival blending folk concerts, traditional dances, and community meals in Saurat
Festen'Oc was born in 2001 in Saurat, a mountain village nestled in a high Pyrenean valley in Ariège. For over twenty years, this entirely free festival has celebrated Occitan culture in all its diversity: music, dance, theater, song, language, and gastronomy. The mix of musical styles — from polyphonic singing to great Occitan singers, as well as young bands blending traditional music, rock, folk, ska, and punk — testifies to the richness and openness of Occitan culture to the contemporary world.
Festen'Oc traditionally opens with a Saint-Jean evening at the end of June, an ancestral celebration marking the beginning of summer. A traditional dance workshop at 6 PM in Place de la Rende opens the festivities, followed by open-air concerts featuring bal folk groups and Occitan music. A community meal by reservation allows festival-goers to share a convivial moment around the flavors of the Pyrenean terroir. This inaugural evening sets the tone for a festival focused on sharing and joie de vivre.
The Festen'Oc program unfolds over several weekends between late June and mid-July. The open-air concert evenings feature bands from all Occitan provinces — Gascony, Languedoc, Provence, but also from the Occitan region of Italy. The 23rd edition in 2025 hosted Trio Bal Folk, Appât de Loop, Mistralkizz, Tribal, KKC Orchestra, CPC, Salvatjonas, Cortesia, and Brick a Drac. During the day, trad'apéros, traditional dance classes, Occitan singing workshops, and an Occitan book and record fair complete the programming.
One of Festen'Oc's strengths is its total freeness, making the event accessible to everyone and attracting a diverse audience, from traditional music lovers to curious passers-by. The Festen'Oc association, run by a team of passionate volunteers including Justine Rouzoul, works year-round to maintain this spirit of conviviality and sharing. Drinks and food are available every concert evening, and the entire event takes place outdoors in the exceptional setting of the mountain village of Saurat, between forests and Pyrenean peaks.
24th edition of Festen'Oc in Saurat, Ariège. The free Occitan culture festival takes place in three parts in 2026: the Saint-Jean evening on Saturday, June 20, the Festen'Oc d'Estiu from Saturday, July 11 to Monday, July 13 (Occitan dances and concerts) and the closing evening on Saturday, October 10.
For its 2026 edition, Festen'Oc, an entirely free Occitan culture festival, unfolds in three events in the village of Saurat, in the heart of the Ariège mountains: the Saint-Jean evening (Saturday, June 20, 2026), the summer highlight, Festen'Oc d'Estiu (from Saturday, July 11 to Monday, July 13, 2026), and the closing evening (Saturday, October 10, 2026). Dances, concerts, Occitan dance and singing workshops follow one another in a spirit of transmission and sharing, faithful to the founding values of Occitan culture, convivencia e paratge.
The festival opens with the traditional Saint-Jean celebration on Place de la Rende, with a traditional dance workshop led by E Guillaud from 6 PM to 7:30 PM (free access, no registration required), followed by open-air concerts.
The festival's highlight brings together groups from across the Occitan region — Gascony, Languedoc, Val d'Aran, Occitan valleys of Italy — for dances and concerts blending tradition and contemporary creation. Catering under a marquee is offered every evening and a free camping area (200 pitches) welcomes festival-goers.
