The great autumn fair and fruit festival in Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy
In the Tarn mountains of Haut-Languedoc, as October draws to a close and the chestnut trees redden the peaks, Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy celebrates its autumn fruits. The Apple and Chestnut Fair, held annually on the last Monday of October, is one of the most authentic rural events in the Tarn, rooted in centuries-old agricultural traditions.
Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy is a commune in the Montagne Noire, the forested massif that forms the southern border of the Massif Central between the Tarn and Hérault departments. Located at an altitude of about 600 meters, the village is surrounded by orchards, chestnut groves, and mixed forests that give autumn a striking palette of colors.
This territory belongs to the Haut-Languedoc Regional Natural Park, one of the largest protected areas in Southern France. The autumn fair naturally fits into this context of preserving traditions and know-how related to nature and agriculture.
The apple is the undisputed star of the fair. From the family orchards of the commune and its surroundings, it arrives in impressive quantities to be processed before the eyes of the public. The artisanal production of apple juice is the central spectacle of the fair:
The apple varieties presented bear witness to the pomological diversity of Haut-Languedoc: Reinette Grise, Calville, cider apples, local varieties often unknown to supermarkets but with incomparable flavors.
Once called the "bread tree" because its fruits nourished rural populations for centuries, the chestnut tree is the emblematic tree of Haut-Languedoc. The fair pays homage to it with:
One of the original features of the Autumn Fair of Saint-Pierre-de-Trivisy is the exhibition of old agricultural equipment. Vintage tractors, plows, mowers, threshers, presses, tools from all eras: this open-air exhibition allows visitors to discover or rediscover the machines that have shaped the agricultural landscape of the region for over a century.
Enthusiasts of old mechanics sometimes give demonstrations, running engines from another age and recalling the know-how of agricultural mechanics of yesteryear. These displays attract both older generations, nostalgic for their rural youth, and children, fascinated by these monumental machines.
Beyond the thematic events, the Autumn Fair is a true traditional fair with its merchants, local producers, and artisans. Cheeses, cured meats, honey, jams, fruit tree saplings, firewood: everything a rural household needs for winter is gathered on this October Monday in the village streets.
The fair is also a social gathering: farmers and residents from neighboring communes meet there to chat, discuss harvests, and share local news. This human dimension, deeply rooted in the tradition of French rural fairs, makes it much more than a simple market — it is a moment of communion for an entire territory.
Admission to the fair is free, in the tradition of rural fairs that are part of the common heritage of communes. Families with children are particularly welcome: the production of apple juice fascinates the youngest, who can sometimes even participate in certain stages of the process under the supervision of the producers.
