The meeting point for Brazilian cinema in France
Created in 1999 by the Jangada association, the Paris Brazilian Film Festival is the oldest and most important festival dedicated to Brazilian cinema in Europe. Every year in April-May, the L'Arlequin cinema in Saint-Germain-des-Prés hosts a selection of Brazilian fiction films, documentaries, and short films, many of which are screened for the first time in France. With over 10,000 spectators each year, this festival is an essential showcase of the richness and diversity of contemporary Brazilian cinema.
Since its creation in 1999, the Paris Brazilian Film Festival has established itself as the essential reference for Brazilian cinema in Europe. Founded by Katia Adler and supported by the Jangada association, this film festival offers a rigorous and eclectic selection of contemporary Brazilian productions each year, presenting Parisian audiences with works that are often new to France, or even new to Brazil itself.
Each edition features around thirty films divided into several sections: fiction in competition, fiction out of competition, documentaries, tributes, and retrospectives. The festival highlights both the big names in Brazilian cinema—established directors and renowned actors—and emerging talents, offering a complete panorama of the creative vitality of the seventh art in Brazil.
Each year, tributes and retrospectives honor major figures in Brazilian cinema. In 2025, actress Dira Paes was celebrated with a retrospective of five films, while a tribute was paid to the acting couple Lázaro Ramos and Taís Araújo.
The festival takes place at the L'Arlequin cinema, 76 rue de Rennes in the 6th arrondissement, an emblematic venue for Parisian art-house cinema located in the heart of Saint-Germain-des-Prés. This intimate setting allows for screenings in optimal conditions and fosters exchanges between the audience and invited filmmakers, many of whom travel from Brazil to present their films.
Beyond the film programming, the Paris Brazilian Film Festival is a true cultural bridge between France and Brazil. It contributes to the dissemination of Brazilian culture in France, promotes exchanges between the film industries of the two countries, and helps in discovering Brazilian society in all its complexity—its struggles, its joys, its contradictions, and its overflowing creativity.
The 28th edition of the Paris Brazilian Film Festival will take place from April 7 to 14, 2026, at the L'Arlequin cinema in Saint-Germain-des-Prés. A curated selection of Brazilian fiction and documentary films, including many French premieres, will be presented to the Parisian audience.
