Circus without borders in the Basque Country
Muga Gabe, "without borders" in Basque, is a contemporary circus festival organized every summer in Urrugne by EASAC, the circus school of the Basque Country. For three days in July, European companies take over the public spaces of Urrugne and partner towns Ascain, Biriatou, and Bera (Spain) for free shows mixing acrobatics, clowning, and physical storytelling. Circus workshops for ages 5 and up, and a festive closing concert complete the program.
Born from the initiative of EASAC (École d'Acrobatie du Spectacle), a circus school based in the Basque Country, the Muga Gabe festival was created with the ambition to promote contemporary circus in the public spaces of the Basque coast. The name "Muga Gabe," meaning "without borders" or "without limits" in the Basque language, reflects the philosophy of an event that rejects all barriers: between artistic disciplines, between audiences, between territories.
One of Muga Gabe's unique features is its cross-border nature. While Urrugne is the beating heart of the festival, shows and workshops spread to several partner towns: Ascain, Biriatou, and Bera (Spanish Navarre). This cross-border dimension, supported by the European EKO program (POCTEFA), reinforces the festival's commitment to circus that travels, connects, and resonates beyond administrative borders.
Each edition hosts several contemporary circus companies selected for the quality and originality of their offerings. The shows explore the diverse registers of today's circus: aerial acrobatics, juggling, balancing, poetic clowning, physical theater, and physical storytelling. In 2025, the program notably featured Cie Rampante (between theater and circus), Cie Mattatoio Sospeso (clownish and poetic universe), and Cie Triphasé (energetic young artists).
All shows are free and open to all, in line with the festival's popular ethos. Free circus workshops are also offered, accessible from age 5 upon registration, allowing children and families to discover the circus arts.
Without the municipality of Urrugne, Muga Gabe would not exist: the town has supported the festival since its inception and provides its public spaces for the performances. The closing concert, a festive and popular event, mixes Basque music, electronic music, and juggling, bringing together locals and visitors in a collective celebration. The festival thus contributes to local cultural life while affirming the Basque Country as a land of circus and creation.
The Muga Gabe festival returns in July 2026 in Urrugne and partner towns for a new edition of borderless contemporary circus. Free outdoor shows, circus workshops for all, and international companies are on the program.
