About Festival du Film court de Grenoble

Created in 1978 by the Cinémathèque de Grenoble, the Festival du Film court en plein air is the oldest short film festival in France. Every end of June, it takes over the Jardin de Ville and the Cinéma Juliet Berto for four days of free outdoor screenings at dusk. Fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental films are showcased in a demanding international competition, complemented by screenings for young audiences, "cartes blanches" (curated programs), and an all-night screening event. The oldest short film festival in France

Born in 1978 from the desire to freely and freely broadcast short films outdoors, the Festival du Film court en plein air de Grenoble is the oldest event dedicated to the short format in France. Organized every year at the end of June by the Cinémathèque de Grenoble, it celebrates international contemporary film creation in a unique setting: nocturnal outdoor screenings in the Jardin de Ville, at the foot of the Bastille, and indoor screenings at the Cinéma Juliet Berto, in the heart of Grenoble's historic center.

A demanding international competition

The general competition is the heart of the festival. It brings together international works of all genres — fiction, documentary, animation, and experimental cinema — by both renowned directors and emerging artists. The films are selected for their artistic quality, narrative originality, and ability to question the contemporary world. Each edition programs about ten screenings, divided between indoor screenings during the day and outdoor screenings at dusk.

A prestigious jury and recognized awards

An official jury composed of film professionals awards several prizes:

  • The Grand Prix (City of Grenoble)
  • The Best Directing Award (Cinémathèque de Grenoble)
  • The Best Screenplay Award (Cinémathèque de Grenoble)
  • The UniFrance Award for international distribution
  • The Audience Award
  • The Juliet Berto Award presented by the selection committee
  • The 5x2 Award for short series, in partnership with GREC, CNC, and France Télévisions

The festival also awards specific prizes for young audiences and teenagers, as well as a mention from the magazine Bref via the Agence du court métrage.

A rich and varied program

Beyond the competition, the festival offers a rich program:

  • Screenings for young audiences: programs adapted for ages 2 and a half and up (ciné-doudou), for 3-6 year olds, 7-12 year olds, and families
  • School screenings: special programming for cycles 1, 2-3, and middle school, with educational support
  • "Cartes blanches": programs entrusted to film personalities
  • Nuit Blanche: a marathon evening of screenings until dawn, with a screening at Cinéma Juliet Berto and an outdoor drive-in at the Bastille
  • Round tables, workshops, and meetings with filmmakers
  • Re-screenings at Cinéma Le Club of programs shown outdoors

A popular and friendly event

With nearly 10,000 spectators each year, the festival is a must-attend event of the Grenoble summer. The free outdoor screenings at the Jardin de Ville, accessible to all, create a warm and festive atmosphere. For nearly fifty years, filmmakers, film professionals, and the general public have gathered in Grenoble to share their passion for short films under the stars.
