The free contemporary music festival at Jardin de Ville in Grenoble
Since 1999, Cabaret Frappé has been Grenoble's unmissable summer event. Every July, the Jardin de Ville transforms into an open, free stage for five evenings of eclectic concerts. From world music to jazz, rap to French chanson, soul, funk, and electro, this multidisciplinary festival brings together nearly 50,000 festival-goers in a green setting in the heart of the city. Entirely free since 2016, it showcases emerging talents while also programming internationally renowned artists.
Cabaret Frappé is the emblematic contemporary music festival of the city of Grenoble. Created in 1999, it has established itself over the years as a flagship summer event in Isère and the Auvergne-Rhône-Alpes region, attracting around 50,000 festival-goers each year to the heart of the Jardin de Ville, under the shade of century-old plane trees.
Cabaret Frappé stands out for its eclectic and bold programming, blending local artists in the process of professionalization with headliners from the national and international scene. The musical genres represented cover a wide spectrum: world music, jazz, soul, funk, rap, French chanson, pop, electro, afrobeat, flamenco, dub, bossa nova, and many others. Each edition features seven local Grenoble groups, seven artists from all over France, and four international bands, offering a true opening to world music.
The festival takes place in the Jardin de Ville, a green space located in the pedestrianized hyper-center of Grenoble. This historic garden, adjacent to the former Hôtel du Duc de Lesdiguières, offers an intimate and friendly setting where spectators enjoy open-air concerts in a relaxed and family-friendly atmosphere. Two stages alternate: the local stage, which hosts Grenoble groups from 7 PM, and the main stage, where national and international artists perform from 8:30 PM.
Since 2016, Cabaret Frappé has become an entirely free festival, true to its public service mission by promoting discovery and access to culture for everyone. This complete freeness, supported by the City of Grenoble, makes Cabaret Frappé a unique model among French summer festivals.
Cabaret Frappé is committed to an ambitious eco-responsible approach. Catering favors short supply chains, organic and local products, with reusable or washable dishes. The festival implements selective sorting, a composting area, and dry toilets. Stage decorations are made from materials sourced from local reuse centers. Cabaret Frappé is also committed to gender-balanced programming, with an equal mix of female and male artists.
Since its creation, Cabaret Frappé has hosted renowned artists such as Orchestra Baobab, Tony Allen, Tricky, Neneh Cherry, Seun Kuti, Caravan Palace, Charlotte Cardin, Féfé, Solann, Brooklyn Funk Essentials, and many others. Alongside the musical program, various activities enrich the experience: readings, world games, street arts, screen printing, and participatory workshops.
The 27th edition of Cabaret Frappé will take place in July 2026 at Jardin de Ville in Grenoble. The festival will continue its tradition of five evenings of free open-air concerts, with an eclectic lineup mixing local artists, national talents, and international bands, true to its commitment to discovery and cultural accessibility for all.
