Classical music concerts in the churches of the Bauges massif
Since 1999, the Festival Musique et Nature en Bauges has been weaving a unique link between classical music and the natural and architectural heritage of the Bauges massif. This traveling festival transforms village churches, chapels, and heritage sites in the Massif des Bauges Regional Natural Park into intimate concert halls each summer, offering music lovers an extraordinary musical experience.
The fundamental originality of the festival lies in the choice of its concert venues. The baroque and Romanesque churches of the Bauges, often little-known to the general public, offer exceptional acoustics and an atmosphere of contemplation conducive to listening. Nestled in mountain villages accessible by winding roads lined with forests, these churches invite the public on a true musical pilgrimage.
The exceptional natural setting of the Bauges massif, a classified Regional Natural Park and recognized UNESCO Global Geopark, enriches each concert with a contemplative dimension. The mountains, with their alpine meadows, limestone cliffs, and dense forests, silently dialogue with the music, creating a rare sensory harmony.
The festival's program spans several centuries of music, from the 17th-century baroque repertoire to 20th-century works. Monteverdi's Vespers, Bach's sonatas, Beethoven's quartets, Fauré's melodies, Debussy's pieces: each concert is an invitation to travel through music history in exceptional listening conditions.
More than 120 artists of national and international renown perform each summer, including soloists, chamber music ensembles, baroque orchestras, and choirs. Over the years, the festival has hosted leading performers such as Abdel Rahman El Bacha, Amandine Beyer, and Vincent Dumestre.
The festival is deeply rooted in the Bauges territory. Based in Le Châtelard, the cantonal capital, it extends throughout the massif and the neighboring communes of Savoie and Haute-Savoie. This traveling dimension helps to showcase the architectural heritage of the mountain villages and attract a diverse audience, including locals, vacationers, and music lovers from all over France.
The 28th edition of the Festival Musique et Nature en Bauges takes place from July 15th to August 22nd, 2026, featuring 13 classical music concerts held in the churches and heritage sites of the Bauges massif, between Savoie and Haute-Savoie. The program includes: Le Poème Harmonique directed by Vincent Dumestre, pianist Lucas Debargue, violinist Tedi Papavrami, A Nocte Temporis (Reinoud Van Mechelen), and Les Paladins, in intimate and preserved settings in the heart of the Parc naturel régional du Massif des Bauges.
