International classical music festival at the Basilica of Saint-Denis
Since 1975, the Festival de Saint-Denis has offered an exceptional classical music program each spring in the sumptuous setting of the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis, the royal necropolis of France. For five weeks in May-June, it brings together renowned orchestras, international vocal ensembles, and prestigious soloists in one of the most remarkable Gothic monuments in Île-de-France.
Founded in 1975, the Festival de Saint-Denis is one of the oldest and most respected classical music festivals in Île-de-France. It takes place every year from May to June in an exceptional heritage setting: the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis, a 12th-century Gothic monument, the necropolis of the kings and queens of France, classified as a historic monument.
For five to six weeks, the festival offers around twenty concerts that explore the entire classical repertoire — medieval, baroque, classical, romantic, and contemporary music — in a spirit of openness and accessibility. It also takes place partly at the Légion d'honneur and at the Église Saint-Denys-de-l'Estrée, offering the public several listening spaces intimately linked to the historical identity of the city.
The Basilica of Saint-Denis offers unique cathedral acoustics, ideal for large choral and orchestral formations. The concerts take on a special spiritual and emotional dimension, amplified by the light of the stained glass windows and the presence of the royal effigies. Over the decades, the festival has hosted ensembles such as Philippe Herreweghe's Collegium Vocale Gent, William Christie's Les Arts Florissants, the Orchestre de Paris, Concerto Köln, and the ensemble Vox Luminis.
Beyond the major concerts, the Festival de Saint-Denis carries out significant outreach work in musical education and access to culture for all. Educational concerts for schoolchildren, baby concerts for toddlers, and music practice workshops are organized in partnership with conservatories and schools in the department throughout the festival.
The festival is also attentive to the social diversity of its audience: deliberately accessible prices allow a wide audience from Seine-Saint-Denis to discover classical music in an exceptional setting. Tickets at 5 euros are offered for children's concerts, and reduced rates benefit residents of the department.
Each edition features major works from the grand repertoire — masses, oratorios, symphonies — and more intimate performances, promoting the discovery of emerging ensembles or less-known repertoires. The festival pays attention to gender parity in its programming and regularly engages female conductors and soloists.
Recurring highlights include candlelit concerts in the basilica's crypt, sacred singing recitals under the choir vaults, and grand symphonic concerts in the central nave, which can accommodate up to 1,500 spectators in hushed silence.
The Festival de Saint-Denis is inseparable from the city that gave it its name and setting. It contributes to the cultural and tourist influence of Saint-Denis, attracts audiences from all over Île-de-France and beyond, and plays a role in enhancing the monumental heritage of the commune. Its organization mobilizes numerous local volunteers and partners, making each edition a community as well as an artistic event.
The 52nd edition of the Festival de Saint-Denis takes place from May 28 to June 23, 2026, at the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis and partner venues. The announced program features The King's Singers, Vox Luminis conducted by Lionel Meunier, the Orchestre National de Lille, soprano Fatma Saïd, and Le Cercle de l'Harmonie with Jérémie Rhorer for a Mozart Mass in C.
The Festival de Saint-Denis returns for its 52nd edition from May 28 to June 23, 2026, with a program that combines masterpieces of the choral and orchestral repertoire with artistic discoveries, always in the sublime setting of the Basilica Cathedral of Saint-Denis.
The King's Singers, a world-renowned British a cappella vocal ensemble, will present a Renaissance program of striking rarity and beauty. Vox Luminis, one of the finest European Baroque vocal ensembles, will be present under the direction of Lionel Meunier. The Orchestre National de Lille, led by Alpesh Chauhan, will perform a Wagner evening in the majestic space of the nave. Egyptian soprano Fatma Saïd will offer a recital spanning various operatic repertoires. Finally, Le Cercle de l'Harmonie conducted by Jérémie Rhorer will perform Mozart's Great Mass in C minor.
Educational concerts, baby concerts, and music practice workshops will complete the program, maintaining the festival's commitment to transmission and access to classical music for all audiences.
