Edition 2025 — Festival de Bruniquel
The 29th edition of the Festival des Châteaux de Bruniquel was held from July 31 to August 10, 2025, on the esplanade of the medieval castles. The Compagnie de la Tour Brunehaut presented "La Périchole" by Jacques Offenbach, a two-act opera-bouffe, in a magnificent nocturnal setting. Tables d'Hôtes with the artists and performances under the stars made this 29th edition a memorable one.
29th edition — "La Périchole" by Offenbach
For its 29th edition, from July 31 to August 10, 2025, the Festival des Châteaux de Bruniquel presented "La Périchole", a two-act opera-bouffe by Jacques Offenbach, with a libretto by Henri Meilhac and Ludovic Halévy after Mérimée.
The work: "La Périchole"
La Périchole (premiered in 1868) is one of Offenbach's most touching works, masterfully blending the sparkling humor of operetta with sincere emotion. The story tells of a Peruvian street singer, La Périchole, and her companion Piquillo. Poor but in love, they are offered a different fate by the Viceroy of Peru that will separate them, sowing jealousy and misunderstandings before an obviously happy ending.
The score is full of famous arias: the famous "Letter," which La Périchole dictates to a public scribe to explain to Piquillo why she is leaving him for the Viceroy, remains one of the most beautiful and moving moments in the French operetta repertoire.
Staging in the medieval ruins
The staging fully integrated the natural setting of the castles of Bruniquel, illuminated at nightfall, their ancient stones serving as a grand backdrop for this sparkling comedy. The contrast between the lightness of the Offenbachian libretto and the austere majesty of the medieval ramparts created a striking scenographic effect, unanimously appreciated by the audience.
The Tables d'Hôtes
As with every edition, the Tables d'Hôtes with the artists were a great success. In the magical atmosphere of the medieval village, spectators shared meals with the singers and musicians, reinforcing the convivial and unique character of this festival that rejects any barrier between art and audience.
