Opéra-bouffe and operetta in the open air at the medieval castles of Bruniquel
The Festival des Châteaux de Bruniquel is a unique lyrical event in France, held every summer on the esplanade of the medieval castles of Bruniquel (12th-13th centuries). The Compagnie de la Tour Brunehaut presents operas-bouffes and operettas by Jacques Offenbach in an exceptional architectural and landscape setting, overlooking the Aveyron valley. Tables d'hôtes with the artists and starry nights make this festival an unforgettable experience.
Nestled on a rocky outcrop overlooking the confluence of the Aveyron and Vère rivers, the village of Bruniquel is home to two strikingly beautiful medieval castles. It is in this exceptional setting, on the esplanade of the castles, that one of the most unique lyrical festivals in the Occitanie region is held each summer: the Festival des Châteaux de Bruniquel.
Led by the Compagnie de la Tour Brunehaut, a cultural association dedicated to musical and lyrical theater, this event has made the work of Jacques Offenbach its specialty and trademark. Opera-bouffe and operetta, popular and festive genres of the 19th century, find a delightful counterpoint in this medieval setting: the sparkling insolence of Offenbach dialoguing with the austerity of centuries-old stones.
Jacques Offenbach (1819-1880) is the composer who invented modern French operetta. His works — Orpheus in the Underworld, La Belle Hélène, La Périchole, La Vie parisienne, Les Brigands — combine satirical and witty librettos with brilliant music, full of melodic virtuosity and catchy rhythms. This blend of apparent lightness and hidden depth, of comedy and emotion, makes him a surprisingly modern and universal composer.
By choosing to dedicate their festival to his work, the Compagnie de la Tour Brunehaut has made a strong artistic choice, combining lyrical excellence with popular accessibility, seriousness of interpretation, and the communicative joy of the performance.
The castles of Bruniquel are among the best-preserved medieval sites in Tarn-et-Garonne. Founded in the 12th and 13th centuries, their towers and keeps have overlooked the Aveyron valley for nearly a thousand years. The village of Bruniquel itself, with its cobbled streets and ochre stone houses climbing around the castles, is classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
The festival performances take place on the esplanade of the castles, an open-air terrace offering a panoramic view of the surrounding valleys. The stage set against the medieval ramparts, the illuminated scenery at nightfall, and the starry sky of the Southwest create a natural scenographic setting that even the best opera houses cannot match.
One of the most appreciated specificities of the Bruniquel Festival is the organization of Tables d'Hôtes with the artists. Before certain performances, spectators are invited to share a meal with the festival's singers and musicians in a friendly atmosphere that bridges the gap between artists and the public. These moments of gourmet and musical sharing, in the setting of the medieval village, have become a founding tradition of the festival.
Since its early editions, the Festival des Châteaux de Bruniquel has developed an artistic standard that translates into recruiting high-level lyrical singers and professional musicians. The productions are directed by stage directors and set designers who fully integrate the specificity of the location into their work.
Operetta, by its nature, is an accessible and popular genre, attracting a multigenerational audience: families, seasoned lyrical music lovers, passing tourists, and loyal attendees who return every year. This popular appeal, without compromising on quality, is at the heart of the Compagnie de la Tour Brunehaut's artistic project.
The Festival des Châteaux de Bruniquel will return for its 30th edition in the summer of 2026 on the esplanade of the medieval castles. The Compagnie de la Tour Brunehaut will present a new production of an opera-bouffe or operetta by Jacques Offenbach in the exceptional nocturnal setting of Bruniquel, a village classified among the Most Beautiful Villages of France.
The Festival des Châteaux de Bruniquel will celebrate its 30th edition in the summer of 2026, a symbolic milestone for this lyrical event that has become a benchmark in the cultural season of Tarn-et-Garonne and Occitanie.
The Compagnie de la Tour Brunehaut will present a new Offenbachian production, the title of which will be announced in early 2026. Nocturnal performances on the esplanade of the castles, Tables d'Hôtes with the artists, and the incomparable atmosphere of the medieval village of Bruniquel will be present for this anniversary edition.
Ticketing and reservations for the Tables d'Hôtes will open on the official website bruniqueloff.com in the spring of 2026.
