Summer cultural season: concerts under the plane trees, mapping on the Abbey Church and gourmet markets in the city of Chasselas
Every summer, Moissac transforms into an open-air cultural stage. The abbey city, world-renowned for its Saint-Pierre Abbey and Romanesque cloister, both listed as UNESCO World Heritage sites, offers an ambitious and popular summer cultural program for four months, making the Moissac summer one of the richest in all of Tarn-et-Garonne.
The Estivales de Moissac were born from the City of Moissac's desire to animate its public and heritage spaces throughout the summer, offering a high-quality program accessible to everyone: residents, vacationers, pilgrims on the Way of Saint James of Compostela passing through the city on their way to Spain, and tourists coming to discover the treasures of Romanesque art.
The most popular format of the Estivales is the free concerts under the plane trees. In Moissac's shaded squares and esplanades, particularly the esplanade by the Tarn river and the town center squares, free open-air concerts are offered throughout the summer. The musical program is deliberately eclectic: jazz, blues, reggae, rock, French variety, world music, flamenco, and Occitan folklore follow one another to please the widest audience.
These concerts under the plane trees embody the spirit of the Estivales: accessible, popular, friendly culture that takes advantage of Moissac's natural beauty — its century-old plane trees, its riverside esplanades, its mild and bright summer evenings — to offer moments of shared grace between artists and the public.
The most spectacular event of the Estivales is undoubtedly the architectural mapping on the Saint-Pierre Abbey Church. Every summer, for several weeks (usually from late July to mid-August), the facade of the abbey church — this masterpiece of Romanesque art with its monumental sculpted tympanum depicting the vision of the Apocalypse according to Saint John — becomes the canvas for a spectacular nocturnal monumental projection.
Studios specializing in video creation and architectural mapping design a new digital creation each year that adorns the ancient stone of the abbey church with lights, colors, and animated images. The dialogue between the medieval sculptures — the faces of the apostles, the fantastic creatures of the tympanum, the capitals of the cloister — and the contemporary projections creates a spectacle of rare beauty and emotion, accessible free of charge every evening during the festival.
This mapping has quickly gained a reputation that extends beyond the department, attracting visitors from all over the Occitanie region and beyond to see the abbey church come alive at nightfall. It has become the emblematic image of the Estivales and one of the most anticipated cultural events of the summer in Tarn-et-Garonne.
The Estivales also feature classical music, with regular performances by the Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse. These classical concerts, held in Moissac's heritage sites — the abbey cloister, the abbey church, or historic halls — offer an exceptional musical and heritage experience. The acoustics of the Romanesque and Gothic volumes, the beauty of the sculpted decorations, and the soft light of candles or stage lighting create a setting of rare intensity for performing classical and baroque repertoire.
The Orchestre de Chambre de Toulouse, founded in 1953, is one of the most renowned ensembles in the Grand Sud-Ouest, and its presence at the Estivales de Moissac guarantees its artistic standards. These concerts are often occasions for thematic programs resonating with the history and heritage of the abbey.
The nocturnal gourmet markets regularly bring together local producers and restaurateurs in a festive and musical atmosphere. It's an opportunity to taste the Chasselas de Moissac AOP, peaches from the Quercy orchards, Fronton wines, and Gascon charcuterie in the town center squares.
Beyond these highlights, the Estivales offer street performances, family entertainment, exhibitions, and themed evenings, a living synthesis of Moissac's identity: a UNESCO-listed pilgrimage city and a gourmet and festive town.
The Estivales de Moissac 2026 return for a new summer cultural season from June 5 to September 19, 2026 in the abbatial city of Tarn-et-Garonne. Free concerts under the plane trees, the sacred music festival Diagonales d'été at the Abbey Church and cloister, gourmet markets, musical evenings on the forecourt of Saint-Pierre Abbey (UNESCO), Sunday market entertainment and heritage events until autumn.
For summer 2026, the City of Moissac renews its major summer cultural season, running from early June to mid-September in the abbatial city of Tarn-et-Garonne. More than twenty free or low-cost events are on the program, mixing open-air concerts, classical and sacred music in the Romanesque cloister and Saint-Pierre Abbey Church, gourmet markets, Sunday entertainment, traditional festivals and live evenings on the abbey forecourt.
Moissac, a stopover town on the Way of Saint-Jacques-de-Compostelle and a jewel of Romanesque art with its sculpted tympanum and 11th-century cloister listed as a UNESCO World Heritage site, puts its heritage spaces at the service of an accessible program. Concerts in the cloister benefit from the exceptional acoustics of the Romanesque arcades, evenings on the abbey forecourt gather several hundred spectators in the cool evening air, and Sunday morning markets on Place des Récollets are animated all summer long by singers, dancers, street artists and magicians.
In accordance with the founding spirit of the Estivales, almost all concerts and events are free. Only the concerts of the Diagonales d'été festival (Ensemble Organum) are paid (10 € per concert, workshops dedicated to singers). The detailed program and any reservations are managed via the Festik ticketing service of the City of Moissac.
Evolving program — other events (free concerts on the forecourt, family entertainment, exhibitions) will be announced throughout the summer on the City of Moissac website. The nocturnal mapping "Le chant des pierres" on the facade of Saint-Pierre Abbey Church, traditionally scheduled for late July and August, should be renewed in 2026 — precise dates to be confirmed by the City closer to the event.
The Estivales events take place in several locations in Moissac:
From June to September each year. Abbey mapping: usually from late July to mid-August. Full program published on the City of Moissac website in May/June.
The vast majority of events are free. Some indoor concerts or special evenings may be ticketed (5 to 10 €). Check the detailed program.
