Theater, music, and popular festival in the park of a historic castle
The Truculent Festival is an open-air performing arts and music festival born in 2025 in the park of the Château de la Forêterie in Allonnes, Sarthe. For three days in August, this thirty-hectare estate of forest and greenery transforms into a festive village where theater performances, concerts, poetic forest walks, DJ sets, and a popular festival atmosphere coexist. Created by the Compagnie Truculent, the festival is conceived as a big village celebration where everyone finds their place, even those who have never set foot in a theater.
Born in August 2025, the Truculent Festival is an extraordinary artistic and human adventure. Set in the park of the Château de la Forêterie in Allonnes, this open-air performing arts and music festival takes over an estate steeped in history: this 19th-century castle, built between 1894 and 1897 under the direction of architect Georges Darcy, was burned down by the Waffen SS in August 1944 and remained in ruins for over seventy years before an ambitious restoration project began in 2015.
The Truculent Festival unfolds its stages over more than thirty hectares of forest and greenery. Spectators wander among the restored castle ruins, clearings set up as theater stages, and forest paths transformed into poetic routes. The atmosphere is inspired by the village festivals of yesteryear: hay bales, garlands, long tables, the smell of sausages and fries, all in a warm and uninhibited conviviality.
The first edition offered fourteen theater performances and four concerts over three days. The theatrical program mixes classic adaptations (Marivaux, Sarraute) and contemporary creations, including puppet theater and intimate forms. Each day concludes with a performance followed by a concert in the spirit of a popular festival: disco cabaret, DJ sets, popular dances, and intimate piano-voice performances punctuate the evenings until 2 a.m.
Co-founded by Florian Miazga, Mathieu Petriat, and Juliette Avice (the castle's beneficial owner), the Truculent Festival carries a strong message: “We really wanted to create a popular show. So that no one feels left out.” Prices are intentionally accessible, with day passes starting from 8 euros for a reduced rate. Sunday mornings offer a family program starting at 10:45 a.m., allowing younger audiences to discover theater in an enchanting setting.
Second edition of the Truculent Festival expected in August 2026 at the Château de la Forêterie in Allonnes. The open-air theater and music festival should return to the historic park.
Building on the success of its first edition, the Truculent Festival is expected to return in August 2026 to the Château de la Forêterie in Allonnes. The organizers have confirmed their intention to make the event sustainable and are already working on the program for the second edition.
The concept will remain true to the inaugural spirit: open-air theater, concerts, poetic forest walks, and a village festival atmosphere in the thirty-hectare park of the historic castle. Dates and programming will be announced in spring 2026.
