Gonesse, an ancient city near Roissy
Gonesse (95500) is one of the oldest towns in the Val-d'Oise, with origins dating back to antiquity and reaching its golden age in the Middle Ages. The town is famous throughout the Île-de-France region for its Gonesse bread, renowned since the 14th century for its exceptional quality, so much so that bakers from Gonesse had the privilege of selling their bread in Paris. The town was also the scene of the Day of the Barricades and battles during the Wars of Religion.
Today, Gonesse has about 26,000 inhabitants and is located a few kilometers from Roissy-Charles-de-Gaulle airport, which is both a significant source of employment and a challenge for quality of life. The town retains a remarkable historic center around its Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church, a Gothic monument from the 11th-16th centuries.
The National Holiday in a historic city
The July 14th National Holiday in Gonesse takes on a special flavor in this city with a rich and turbulent history. Celebrated around the Gothic church and the medieval streets of the town center, as well as in the surrounding modern neighborhoods, the national holiday is a time for reunion between the different facets of Gonesse, between its medieval past and its resolutely contemporary present.
Fireworks and entertainment
The July 14th fireworks are launched from the open spaces of the town, offering a spectacle visible from many points in Gonesse. Residents gather in green spaces, courtyards, and squares to watch the pyrotechnic display in a festive and friendly atmosphere.
Popular entertainment is organized throughout the day: children's games, concerts, sports, and cultural activities allow families to enjoy a complete festive day. The popular balls, a quintessential republican tradition, bring together the people of Gonesse in the evening to dance and celebrate the Republic together.
The Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church, a Gothic jewel
The Saint-Pierre-Saint-Paul church of Gonesse is one of the most remarkable Gothic monuments in the Val-d'Oise. Built between the 11th and 16th centuries, this church is a masterpiece of Île-de-France Gothic architecture, with its 12th-century nave, side chapels, flamboyant portal, and numerous works of art. It forms the historic heart of Gonesse and a visual landmark for the entire town.
The July 14th festivities are often organized near this emblematic monument, which lends a special atmosphere to the celebrations, blending medieval history with republican celebration. This contrast between ancient stone and contemporary popular festivities is one of the most endearing characteristics of the National Holiday in Gonesse.
Gonesse, between tradition and modernity
The town of Gonesse is at the heart of major contemporary issues: the Triangle de Gonesse project, a vast development operation on agricultural land between the town and Roissy airport, has been the subject of national debates on soil sealing and the preservation of farmland. The National Holiday is part of this context of a city in transition, where its millennial past and future challenges constantly coexist.
