Republican ceremony, popular ball and fireworks on the Leisure Island for July 14th
Every July 14th, Étampes celebrates the National Day with a ceremony at the Town Hall, a popular ball hosted by the Orchestre Millénium on the Leisure Island, and fireworks at 11 PM. The medieval town in southern Essonne honors the Republic with a festive program combining solemnity and popular joy.
Each year, the town of Étampes celebrates the July 14th National Day with a program that happily combines republican solemnity and popular festivities. As the first town in southern Essonne, Étampes has honored the commemoration of the Storming of the Bastille for generations with an event awaited by all Étampois residents.
The festivities begin in the morning with a commemorative ceremony held at 9:30 AM in front of the Étampes Town Hall. Open to all residents, this official ceremony brings together elected officials, representatives of patriotic associations, veterans, and constituted bodies around the symbols of the Republic. The Marseillaise, the laying of wreaths, and official speeches give this morning its solemn and moving character.
This morning ceremony is an important moment in the civic life of Étampes. It reminds citizens of the deep meaning of the date and the history behind it, from the events of 1789 to the Federation Festival of 1790, and through all the stages that have made France the Republic it is today.
In the evening, the Leisure Island hosts the popular festivities. Starting at 10:30 PM, the Orchestre Millénium takes the stage to host a grand popular ball that continues until 1 AM. This orchestra, specializing in dance nights, offers a repertoire that gets all generations dancing: French and international variety, musette, popular standards, and contemporary hits follow one another on the dance floor.
The Leisure Island of Étampes is an ideal setting for this type of event: a landscaped natural space by the water, it offers space, fresh air, and a rustic atmosphere that contrasts pleasantly with urban balls. Families gather there to have dinner together before the ball, and friends extend the evening until the early hours of the night.
At 11 PM, in the midst of the ball, the signal for the grand fireworks sounds. Fired from the Leisure Island, this pyrotechnic show illuminates the sky of southern Essonne in a display of colors and lights that amazes all spectators. The fireworks are the highlight of the evening, that suspended moment when all conversations stop and all eyes turn to the sky in a single movement.
Étampes is one of the richest heritage cities in the Île-de-France region. A former medieval royal residence, it preserves exceptional vestiges of its glorious past: the Guinette Tower (12th-century royal keep), several medieval churches including the remarkable Notre-Dame-du-Fort, Saint-Basile, Saint-Gilles, and Saint-Martin, as well as the former viscounty hotel. The historic center of Étampes, with its half-timbered houses and Renaissance private mansions, is one of the most beautiful in the region.
The town is also the capital of southern Essonne, an important administrative and commercial center that radiates over a vast rural territory. With approximately 22,000 inhabitants, Étampes combines the charm of a human-sized town with facilities worthy of a dynamic urban area.
The National Day of Étampes is more than just a program of entertainment: it is a collective ritual that unites residents of all origins and generations around a common identity. In a town rich with a thousand-year history, July 14th takes on a special resonance: it recalls that Republican France was built on universal values that each generation must pass on and celebrate.
