Every July 14th, the town of Giromagny (90200) celebrates the National Day in the unique mountain setting at the foot of the Ballon d'Alsace. Capital of the Vosges sub-region of the Territoire de Belfort, this town with an exceptional industrial and mining past organizes a festive program each year combining popular entertainment, a republican ball, and a pyrotechnic show.
Giromagny is one of the most historic municipalities in the Territoire de Belfort. Formerly a Habsburg mining town in the Middle Ages—where silver, lead, and copper were extracted—the town was later attached to France after the Treaty of Westphalia in 1648. Its remarkable built heritage, picturesque streets, and location at the foot of the Ballon d'Alsace (1,241 m) make it a town steeped in symbolism, where July 14th resonates with particular force.
The highlight of the evening is the fireworks display launched from the heights overlooking the town. The luminous bursts are reflected on the wooded slopes of the Southern Vosges, offering a pyrotechnic spectacle of exceptional beauty in this natural setting. The crowd gathered in the town's public spaces enjoys an unobstructed view of this bouquet of lights that concludes the evening.
Before the fireworks, Giromagny comes alive in the evening with concerts, entertainment for children and families, and the traditional popular ball that brings residents together. Refreshment stands and food stalls complete the festive setup, allowing everyone to enjoy a convivial evening before the final pyrotechnic show.
National Day is an opportunity for Giromagny to reaffirm its commitment to the values of the Republic. The municipality, driven by its unique history and geography, makes July 14th a moment of civic gathering that transcends generations. The municipality and local associations work together to offer a free program each year, accessible to all.
