The greatest gathering of clowns in France
Le Très Grand Conseil Mondial des Clowns is the largest clowning event in France, and indeed in Europe. Created in 2003 in Niort by the company Les Matapeste, this biennial festival brings together clown artists from around the world for a weekend of shows, workshops, and meetings in the heart of the city. Since its first edition, 250 clowns from 29 nationalities have participated in this unique event.
Since 2003, the Très Grand Conseil Mondial des Clowns has transformed Niort into the world capital of clowning art. Created by the Niort-based company Les Matapeste, this unique festival brings together the best clown artists from around the world every two years for a weekend of shows, encounters, and celebration of this universal art.
The festival is recognized as the largest clowning event in France, and even in Europe. Since its creation, 250 clowns from 29 different nationalities have graced the stages of Niort. Each edition hosts about ten guest companies that offer around thirty performances combining circus, theater, music, and performance, from family shows to one-man shows for adults.
The festival takes over several emblematic venues in the city center of Niort: the Patronage Laïque, the Villa Pérochon, and the Gymnase Barra. This free Clown Village offers spectators a total immersion into the world of clowns with indoor shows, parades, makeup workshops, and artist meet-and-greets.
Between festival editions, the TGCMC association organizes the Caravane Internationale des Clowns, which travels through the towns of Deux-Sèvres and the region. More than 100 towns have already hosted this traveling caravan, bringing the spirit of the festival to rural areas. Nearly 120 French and foreign partners support each edition.
