Les Luminessences d'Avignon 2025 — The City of Popes in Light

From June 21 to September 21, 2025, Les Luminessences d'Avignon took over the monumental facade of the Palais des Papes every evening, transforming Place du Palais into an open-air nocturnal amphitheater. For three months, tens of thousands of spectators had the chance to discover or rediscover this unique show.

A Journey Through Eight Centuries of Avignon's History

The 2025 show took spectators on a journey through the history of Avignon, from the city's origins to its greatest period of influence – the 14th century, when the Popes of Avignon made it the capital of Western Christendom. The narration, carried by a warm voice and an original soundtrack blending medieval polyphony and contemporary compositions, guided the audience from room to room, from era to era, on a sensitive and spectacular journey.

Architectural Mapping Scenography

The Gothic facade of the Palais des Papes, its imposing towers, and its hundreds of meters of ramparts served as the canvas for high-definition projections of exceptional visual quality. The technical teams used the latest video mapping technologies to create striking three-dimensional effects: animated columns, moving figures, artificial starry skies, flames, and flowing water erupting from the stone.

Warm colors – gold, red, and purple – evoked the splendor of the papal court, while more intimate sequences, in blue and gray, paid homage to the poets and artists who contributed to the cultural glory of medieval Avignon – Petrarch, Simone Martini, Matteo Giovannetti.

Confirmed Popular Success

The 2025 edition welcomed over 50,000 spectators throughout the season, confirming Les Luminessences as one of the most attended sound and light shows in the South of France. Family audiences, foreign tourists, and school groups constituted the main visitor groups, demonstrating the show's ability to reach very different audiences.
