Every summer, as night falls on Avignon, the facade of the Palais des Papes comes alive with enchanting light projections and sounds. Les Luminessences d'Avignon is the grand sound and light show of the City of Popes, a nocturnal and immersive experience that plunges spectators into the heart of eight centuries of Avignon's history.

The Palais des Papes, the most imposing Gothic monument of the medieval world and the residence of the Popes of Avignon in the 14th century, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offers an exceptional canvas for this type of light staging. Its austere and monumental facade, its massive towers, and its powerful buttresses become, for the duration of the show, a living screen onto which images of striking beauty are projected.

A Journey Through the History of Avignon

The Luminessences show takes spectators on a journey through the history of Avignon, from its ancient origins to its European prominence as the capital of the papacy in the 14th century, including the great figures who shaped the city – the popes, artists, poets, warriors, and merchants who made Avignon one of France's most fascinating cities.

The narration, carried by a voice and an original soundtrack blending medieval music, contemporary compositions, and sound effects, guides spectators through the different eras of the city's history. The projections cover the entire main facade of the palace on Place du Palais, creating a total spectacle that literally envelops the audience.

High-Tech Light Scenography

Les Luminessences d'Avignon utilizes the most advanced video mapping and architectural projection technologies. Dozens of high-definition video projectors, positioned on Place du Palais and its surroundings, cover the thousands of square meters of the Gothic facade with colorful lights, moving shapes, and animated images.

The scenography plays with the reliefs and volumes of medieval architecture – the towers, battlements, mullioned windows, arches, and cornices – to create striking three-dimensional effects. Columns seem to come alive, ramparts take on life, and historical figures re-emerge from the stone. This architectural mapping technique, born in the 2000s and now mastered at an exceptional level of virtuosity, gives Les Luminessences its spectacular and unforgettable character.

An Original Soundtrack

The soundtrack for Les Luminessences is specially composed for the show. It blends pieces of medieval and polyphonic music – paying homage to the musical richness of the papal court of Avignon in the 14th century – with contemporary compositions, atmospheric effects, and narrative voices. The ensemble creates a total sensory experience, in which music, images, and architecture respond to and complement each other.

Organized every summer during the peak tourist season, Les Luminessences d'Avignon caters to a very wide audience: French and foreign tourists discovering Avignon for the first time, families with children, history and heritage enthusiasts, and digital art lovers. The show is offered in several languages, with narration available in French, English, and Spanish.

Les Luminessences is one of the most attended sound and light shows in the South of France, welcoming tens of thousands of spectators to Place du Palais every summer.
