ℹ️ Show discontinued. Les Luminessences d'Avignon was the grand summer sound and light show at the Palais des Papes in Avignon from 2013 to 2017. After five seasons, this monumental nocturnal mapping show is no longer held and is no longer scheduled at the Palais des Papes.
For five summers, monumental 360° projections adorned the facades of the main courtyard of the Palais des Papes with lights, images, and music, telling the history of Avignon, capital of Christianity in the 14th century. Created by Bruno Seillier and produced by Amaclio in partnership with Avignon Tourisme, the show attracted several hundred thousand spectators in total before its discontinuation after the 2017 edition.
ℹ️ Show discontinued. Les Luminessences d'Avignon are no longer scheduled. After five summer seasons from 2013 to 2017, this monumental sound and light show at the Palais des Papes came to an end. The last edition took place from August 12 to September 30, 2017. To date, the Palais des Papes no longer offers a nocturnal mapping show of this type.
Every summer, as night fell over Avignon, the facades of the main courtyard of the Palais des Papes came alive with luminous projections and enchanting sounds. From 2013 to 2017, Les Luminessences d'Avignon was the grand sound and light show of the City of Popes, a nocturnal and immersive experience that plunged spectators into the heart of eight centuries of Avignon's history.
The Palais des Papes, the most imposing Gothic monument in the medieval world and residence of the Avignon popes in the 14th century, a UNESCO World Heritage site, offered an exceptional backdrop for this luminous staging. Its massive towers, powerful buttresses, and the four irregular facades of its main courtyard became, for the duration of the show, a living screen onto which images of breathtaking beauty were projected.
The Luminessences show took spectators on a journey through the history of Avignon, from its origins to its European influence as the capital of the papacy in the 14th century, passing through the great figures who marked the city — the popes, artists, poets, and merchants who made Avignon one of the most fascinating cities in France.
The narration, carried by a voice and an original soundtrack combining medieval music and contemporary compositions, guided spectators through the different eras of the city's history. The show, designed in 360°, projected its images onto the four facades of the palace's main courtyard, literally enveloping the audience.
Les Luminessences d'Avignon utilized video mapping and architectural projection technologies. Dozens of high-definition video projectors covered thousands of square meters of the Gothic facades with colorful lights, moving shapes, and dynamic images. The scenography played with the reliefs and volumes of the medieval architecture — the towers, battlements, twin windows, arches, and cornices — to create striking three-dimensional effects.
The show was a creation by Bruno Seillier, implemented by the cultural production company Amaclio in partnership with Avignon Tourisme, a mixed-economy company managing Avignon's main tourist infrastructures. Over its five seasons (2013-2017), it welcomed several hundred thousand spectators and established itself as one of the most popular sound and light shows in the south of France.
After the 2017 edition, which ran from August 12 to September 30, Les Luminessences d'Avignon was not renewed. The show, which had marked Avignon's summer evenings for five years, ceased to be programmed. The Palais des Papes continues to host numerous cultural events throughout the year (tours, concerts, theatrical readings in the gardens), but no nocturnal mapping sound and light show comparable to Les Luminessences has, to date, taken its place.
