About Lourmarin Festival

Every summer, the Lourmarin Music Festival takes over the Renaissance castle of this village, listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France. In the Great Hall with its monumental fireplaces and in the castle's inner courtyard, leading pianists, violinists, and chamber musicians give recitals and concerts of rare quality. An intimate and demanding festival, celebrating classical music in the Provençal village where Albert Camus lived and was buried.

Lourmarin, village of artists and enthusiasts

Lourmarin is one of the jewels of the Luberon. This hilltop village on the southern face of the massif, nestled in the Aigue Brun valley between the Grand Luberon and the Petit Luberon, is listed among the Most Beautiful Villages of France and has long held a reputation as a favored spot for artists and intellectuals. Albert Camus, Nobel Prize in Literature 1957, lived the latter part of his life here in the farmhouse he bought with his Nobel prize money, and is buried in the village's small cemetery—a guiding presence that continues to attract visitors, readers, and culture lovers to this village of some 1,100 inhabitants.

The Château de Lourmarin, a remarkable 15th and 16th-century building, is one of the first Renaissance castles built in Provence. Restored in the early 20th century thanks to the legacy of painter Robert Laurent-Vibert, it is now owned by the Academy of Aix, which has opened it to culture and visitors. Its Great Hall, adorned with a double monumental fireplace, and its inner courtyard offer concert spaces of rare intimacy and elegance, where Renaissance stone naturally dialogues with music.

A classical music festival in the castle

The Lourmarin Music Festival takes advantage of this exceptional setting to offer a high-level classical music program each summer. Piano recitals, chamber music concerts, duos, and trios—the festival favors intimate ensembles that match the castle's human scale and the natural acoustics of its stone volumes.

The invited artists are nationally and internationally renowned instrumentalists and ensembles, who find in this Provençal setting a rare opportunity to perform in a living historic monument. For musicians and spectators alike, the magic of the place—the golden stones warmed by the Provençal sun, the scent of lavender rising from the gardens, the village's silence contrasting with the festival's life—creates an extraordinary musical experience.

The repertoire spans the great works of the classical and romantic periods—Bach, Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Debussy—but also less familiar works, by Provençal and Mediterranean composers, and sometimes premieres or regional first performances. This attention to repertoire diversity, combined with the excellence of the performers, makes the festival a highly anticipated event for music lovers throughout the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region and beyond.

The formula: summer recitals and concerts

In July and August, the Lourmarin Music Festival offers a series of concerts that punctuate the Provençal summer. Concert evenings begin as the day's heat subsides, when the air cools and the last rays of the sun redden the castle stones. Spectators settle into the Great Hall or the castle courtyard, and the music begins, carried by the favorable acoustics of the stone walls.

Between concerts, evenings invite strolls through Lourmarin's narrow streets—Rue du Temple, Place Henri Barthélémy with its fountain—and lingering at the restaurant terraces that animate the village late into the night. The festival is also an excuse for stays in the Luberon, to discover the surrounding villages (Bonnieux, Ménerbes, Lacoste, Roussillon, Ansouis), the local markets, and the massif's incomparable landscapes.

The legacy of Albert Camus in Lourmarin

Visiting Lourmarin during the festival also means walking in the footsteps of Albert Camus. The writer's house is visible in the village, and his tomb—simple, with a stone slab and a rosemary plant—in the communal cemetery welcomes visitors from around the world each year. Camus loved Lourmarin for its beauty, its calm, and its light, and found there the peace that allowed him to write. This literary presence reinforces the village's cultural character and nurtures a special atmosphere, blending Provençal beauty with intellectual depth.

The Académie des sciences, agriculture, arts et belles-lettres d'Aix, owner of the castle since 1920, perpetuates this spirit by organizing cultural visits, conferences, and artistic events throughout the year, with the music festival being the summer highlight.

The Château de Lourmarin, a monument to visit

The castle alone is worth the trip. Built from 1470 under the orders of the d'Agoult family, then enlarged in the 16th century in the Renaissance style by the Brancas family, it is one of the first Renaissance-style castles built in Provence. Its architecture blends medieval towers with mullioned windows, spiral staircases, and sculpted fireplaces characteristic of the French Renaissance. The restoration carried out by Robert Laurent-Vibert in the 1920s restored its splendor while equipping it with collections of furniture and art objects from the 17th to the 19th centuries.

Guided tours of the castle, offered year-round, allow visitors to discover the furnished apartments, kitchens, library, and chapel. During the festival period, the castle comes alive with a special cultural vibrancy that reveals it in its best light.

Lourmarin Festival — edition 2026

The Lourmarin Castle Summer Music Festival returns in 2026 from July 11th to October 10th for a new season of classical music recitals and concerts. In the Renaissance castle of this Most Beautiful Village in France, pianists, cellists, and violinists from major conservatories give a series of evening concerts. The 2026 edition coincides with the centenary of the Laurent-Vibert Foundation, owner of the castle.

2026 Edition — The Centenary of the Laurent-Vibert Foundation

The Lourmarin Castle Summer Music Festival presents its 2026 season from July 11th to October 10th, in the heart of the Renaissance castle that overlooks this village, classified among the Most Beautiful Villages in France. This edition is part of the celebration of the centenary of the Laurent-Vibert Foundation, which saved and restored the castle in the 1920s and has since ensured its cultural vocation.

The program brings together performers chosen by the foundation, mostly from major national and international conservatories. Evenings begin at 9:00 PM in the intimate setting of the castle, where the Renaissance stone and the acoustics of the ancient volumes highlight piano recitals and chamber music. The repertoire covers great classical and romantic works — Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Franck — performed by leading young soloists.

The festival opens on July 11th with a gala concert featuring cellist Dominique de Williencourt and pianist Mila Gostijanovic, then continues throughout the summer with piano recitals and duos before extending into early autumn. An exhibition, «A Century of Art at Lourmarin Castle», accompanies the centenary season and is included in the castle entrance ticket.

Tickets are available online on BilletWeb. As the capacity of the castle rooms is limited, early booking is highly recommended. Information: +33 4 90 68 15 23.
