Bonnieux, a hilltop village in the heart of the Luberon

Bonnieux is one of the jewels of the northern slope of the Luberon. Perched at over 400 meters above sea level on a steep rocky outcrop, this village of some 1,400 inhabitants overlooks the Calavon plain and faces, across the valley, the villages of Lacoste and Ménerbes. Listed among the Most Beautiful Villages in France, Bonnieux is one of the most photographed places in the Luberon — its golden stone houses stacked in tiers on the hillside, its giant cedars, its old Romanesque bell tower, and its 360° panorama over all of Provence make it a vision of almost unreal beauty.

The village has remarkable architectural heritage: the high church, from the 12th century, offers from its forecourt one of the most spectacular panoramas in the entire Luberon over the Luberon chain, Mont Ventoux, the Alpilles, and on a clear day, as far as the Alps. The low church, from the 19th century, is the village's ordinary place of worship. The Maison du Boulanger, which houses the Bakery Museum, testifies to the historical importance of craftsmanship in Bonnieux life. The stepped alleyways, fountains, washhouses, and unexpected views make it a village to wander through endlessly.

Bonnieux also has a well-established artistic tradition: painters, sculptors, photographers, and ceramicists have lived there for decades, attracted by the light and beauty of the site. Art galleries and artist studios dot the village, creating an atmosphere of creativity and aesthetic curiosity that naturally prepares one for musical appreciation.

The Rencontres Musicales: a festival reflecting the village

The Rencontres Musicales de Bonnieux is a festival that reflects its host village: elegant without ostentation, demanding without pretension, open, and welcoming. The programming, built around classical and chamber music, prioritizes the quality of the artists and the intimate relationship between performers and the audience, in spaces that only allow for modest capacities — and it is precisely this aspect that gives the festival its charm and added value.

The high church of Bonnieux, a 12th-century Romanesque church, is the main venue for the concerts. Its acoustics, the beauty of its stone volumes, its historiated capitals, and its stained-glass windows create an atmosphere of contemplation and beauty that perfectly matches chamber music. For some concerts, the high square, in front of the church, can be used for open-air performances, with the Luberon panorama as a backdrop.

The programming mixes the great works of the Baroque, Classical, and Romantic repertoire with less frequently performed pieces, regional or Mediterranean composers, and sometimes new creations. Baroque music ensembles — quartets, duos, trios — perform alongside contemporary soloists, creating a rich and varied musical journey throughout the summer evenings.

The tradition of concerts in heritage sites

The choice of the high church and the village's heritage sites is not accidental. The Rencontres Musicales de Bonnieux are part of a very Provençal tradition of enhancing heritage through live music. In the Vaucluse and the Luberon, this tradition is ancient: the Chorales de Vaison-la-Romaine, the concerts at the Abbaye de Sénanque, the musical evenings in the Romanesque chapels of the Luberon — all examples that show classical music finds a particular resonance in these stones steeped in history, as if the past centuries amplified the beauty of the present.

The natural acoustics of Romanesque buildings — barrel vaults, thick walls, natural materials — are generally favorable to chamber music, whose sound textures diffuse and blend into the stone in a way that cannot be replicated in a modern concert hall. For musicians, playing in these spaces is an experience that changes their relationship with music; for listeners, it is a way to hear the works differently, closer to the original sound in which many of them were conceived.

Bonnieux and the Luberon, a land of art and flavors

The Rencontres Musicales de Bonnieux are also an opportunity to discover the rich Luberon region. A few kilometers from the village, Lacoste and its Marquis de Sade castle host the famous Festival de Lacoste, founded by Pierre Cardin — two neighboring festivals that create an exceptional cultural offering within a few square kilometers. Ménerbes, where Peter Mayle wrote his famous 'A Year in Provence', Gordes and the Abbaye de Sénanque, Roussillon and its ochres — the Luberon forms an incomparable natural setting.

The region's gastronomy complements the cultural experience: Côtes du Luberon wines, AOC olive oil, sheep and goat cheeses from the alpine pastures, lavender honey, Cavaillon melons, and cherries from the Monts de Vaucluse make up an exceptional terroir that the markets and restaurants of the Luberon know how to showcase.

Rencontres Musicales de Bonnieux — edition 2026

The Rencontres Musicales de Bonnieux 2026 return to the Romanesque high church and the spaces of the hilltop village for a new season of classical and chamber music concerts. Leading soloists and ensembles will liven up the summer evenings of this Most Beautiful Village in France in the Luberon in July and August.

2026 Edition — The Beauty of Stone and the Beauty of Music

The Rencontres Musicales de Bonnieux 2026 promise to be another luminous edition in the unparalleled setting of the 12th-century Romanesque high church and the spaces of the hilltop village. From mid-July to mid-August, the program will bring together artists whose quality matches the beauty of the place.

The selection of artists for 2026, as usual, favors chamber music ensembles — the format best suited to the acoustics and capacity of the Romanesque church — and talented soloists, pianists and string players who will find an exceptional setting within these Romanesque walls to express their art.

The program will include Baroque and Classical works — Bach, Handel, Vivaldi, Mozart, Haydn — great Romantic classics — Schubert, Schumann, Brahms, Mendelssohn — and French composers — Fauré, Debussy, Ravel — who have a particular connection to the landscape and light of Provence. One or two concerts may feature Provençal or contemporary composers, in the spirit of openness and curiosity that characterizes the festival.

Reservations for the 2026 edition will open in June on the Bonnieux town hall website and at the Bonnieux-Buoux-Ménerbes Tourist Office. As the church's capacity is limited, early booking is strongly recommended for the most anticipated evenings.
