Rarely performed Baroque female composers will also be highlighted. For the first time, the festival welcomes one of the most renowned British vocal ensembles, The Gesualdo Six, accompanied by trumpeter Matilda Lloyd.

Les Musicales de l'Abbaye du Thoronet: Ancient Music in a Stone Sanctuary
The Abbaye du Thoronet, founded around 1160 by Cistercian monks from the Abbey of Mazan in Ardèche, is one of the Three Sisters of Cistercian Provence, along with Sénanque and Silvacane. Classified as a historic monument and a UNESCO World Heritage site, it is considered one of the absolute masterpieces of Cistercian architecture: sober, unadorned, luminous, it perfectly embodies the ideal of spiritual beauty advocated by Saint Bernard of Clairvaux.
Its golden limestone walls, its cloister with trapezoidal arcades, its abbey church with a prominent transept, and its monastic buildings form an architectural ensemble of rare coherence and formal purity. But what distinguishes the Thoronet Abbey as much as its architecture is its extraordinary acoustics: the limestone of its vaults, the shape of its apse, and the proportions of its spaces create a natural reverberation of several seconds, ideal for Gregorian chant, polyphony, and any a cappella or instrumental music with strings and winds.
A Festival Born of Evident Necessity
It is precisely this legendary acoustics that inspired the creation of Les Musicales de l'Abbaye du Thoronet in 2022. Initiated by the Centre des monuments nationaux (National Monuments Centre), which manages the site, these musical evenings filled an obvious need: Thoronet was calling for music. The Centre des monuments nationaux entrusted the programming to specialists in medieval and ancient music, ensuring a perfect match between the repertoire and the exceptional architectural setting.
Since its first edition, the festival has established itself as a benchmark event for lovers of ancient and sacred music in the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur region. Its formula—evening concerts in the abbey, at a time when daytime visitors have left, offering spectators an almost mystical intimacy and atmosphere—immediately captivated a discerning and attentive audience.
The Abbey's Unique Acoustics, an Instrument for Musicians
The acoustics of Thoronet have been a subject of study and fascination for decades. Musicologist and architect Iannis Xenakis, who participated in the abbey's restoration in the 1970s, was one of the first to highlight the musical dimension of Cistercian architecture. Musicians who have had the chance to perform at Thoronet unanimously testify to a unique sensory experience: voices and instruments resonate and blend with the stone in a way that transcends ordinary performance.
Gregorian chant, medieval polyphony, baroque, and contemporary a cappella music are particularly enhanced by this natural acoustic setting. The choirs and vocal ensembles performing there enter into a mysterious dialogue with the architecture of the place, each musical phrase taking on unexpected breadth and depth.
A Program of Ancient and Sacred Music
Les Musicales du Thoronet offers a program focused on medieval, Renaissance, baroque, and sacred music, with particular attention to a cappella vocal music and small instrumental ensembles well-suited to the abbey's acoustics. Gregorian chant, medieval polyphony, Renaissance motets, baroque works for strings and continuo, contemporary sacred music: the repertoire is as vast as the spirituality of the place.
Les Chantres du Thoronet, a vocal ensemble formed specifically for the festival, is one of the emblematic groups in the programming. Trained in the interpretation of Gregorian chant and medieval polyphony, they offer an opening concert each edition that immerses spectators in the spiritual and sonic atmosphere of the medieval abbey.
Privileged Access to an Exceptional Monument
The concerts of Les Musicales allow the public to experience the Thoronet Abbey in exceptional conditions: at night, without the constraints of daytime visits, in intimate connection with the architecture and spirituality of the place. This heritage dimension is at the heart of the festival's approach, which sees music as a privileged vector for transmitting heritage.
