International chamber music festival in the villages of the Luberon
Founded in 1976, the Festival International de Quatuors à Cordes du Luberon is one of the oldest and most prestigious chamber music festivals in France. Every year in August, great international string quartets perform in the Romanesque churches and heritage sites of the hilltop villages of the Luberon — Goult, Roussillon, Cabrières d'Avignon, La Roque-d'Anthéron — for concerts of rare intensity in exceptional acoustic and architectural settings.
Born in 1976 on the initiative of chamber music enthusiasts eager to anchor great music in the Provençal villages, the Festival International de Quatuors à Cordes du Luberon celebrates its 50th edition in 2026. In half a century of existence, it has established itself as a global benchmark in string quartet programming, attracting the world's greatest ensembles and a loyal audience from all over Europe.
The festival draws its unique identity from the encounter between a demanding repertoire — Haydn, Beethoven, Schubert, Brahms, Debussy, Ravel, Bartók, Shostakovich, as well as contemporary creations — and historic venues: the small Romanesque churches with ochre stone walls, medieval abbeys, and hilltop villages of the Luberon Regional Natural Park provide a setting whose silent beauty enhances chamber music.
The itinerant nature is at the heart of the festival's identity. Each concert takes place in a different venue, inviting the public to discover or rediscover the architectural heritage of the Luberon through musical evenings:
These small-capacity venues — rarely more than 200 to 300 seats — create a rare intimacy between musicians and the audience, transforming each concert into an almost secret and precious experience.
Over the decades, the festival has hosted the most renowned quartets on the international scene. Among the ensembles invited over the years are the Alban Berg Quartet, the Amadeus Quartet, the Borodin Quartet, the Kronos Quartet, the Emerson Quartet, the Artemis Quartet, the Ebène Quartet, the Diotima Quartet, and many others. The festival also pays attention to young ensembles at the beginning of their international careers, offering them a prestigious stage to gain recognition.
For the 2026 edition, the program honors this tradition of excellence with, notably, the Quatuor Hermès, the Quatuor Quiroga, the Quatuor Métamorphoses, the Quatuor Novo, and the Quatuor Magenta, for evenings that explore the peaks of the repertoire from Haydn to the present day.
The 2026 edition holds particular significance: it marks the fiftieth anniversary of the festival. Half a century of concerts, discoveries, and musical emotions shared within the stone walls of the Luberon villages. For this anniversary, the program promises to be particularly ambitious, with world-class ensembles and special evenings paying homage to the festival's history.
Thematic cycles will allow audiences to journey through centuries of repertoire: from the invention of the genre by Haydn to the foundational scores of Beethoven, from the German Romantics to the modernists of the 20th century, and on to living composers who continue to push the boundaries of the form. The anniversary edition will also be an opportunity to welcome back some of the flagship ensembles that have written the festival's history.
For several years, the festival has been working to reduce its ecological footprint, encouraging carpooling between villages, limiting plastic use, and favoring local producers for intermission refreshments. It is supported by the Luberon Regional Natural Park, the Vaucluse Department, the Provence-Alpes-Côte d'Azur Region, and the Ministry of Culture.
The 50th edition of the Festival International de Quatuors à Cordes du Luberon will take place from August 15 to 28, 2026, in Goult, Roussillon, Cabrières d'Avignon, and at Silvacane Abbey. This exceptional anniversary brings together world-renowned quartets for a series of concerts in the heritage sites of the Luberon, celebrating half a century of chamber music in Provence.
The Festival International de Quatuors à Cordes du Luberon celebrates its fiftieth anniversary in 2026. Half a century after its first edition, the festival remains true to its founding spirit: to offer the most demanding chamber music a setting worthy of its prestige, in the heart of the irreplaceable landscapes of the Luberon.
To mark this anniversary, the festival has curated a particularly ambitious program. The Quatuor Hermès, the Quatuor Quiroga, the Quatuor Métamorphoses, the Quatuor Novo, and the Quatuor Magenta will be present for concerts that span five centuries of repertoire, from Orlando Gibbons to our contemporaries. On some evenings, flagship ensembles that have contributed to the festival's history will return to celebrate this jubilee together.
The concerts take place across the villages and heritage sites of the Luberon. Each evening, a new venue, a new program, a new encounter between stone and music. The Saint-Sébastien Church in Goult, the Saint-Michel Church in Roussillon, the Saint-Vincent Church in Cabrières d'Avignon, and Silvacane Abbey in La Roque-d'Anthéron will host the concerts of this jubilee edition.
