About a hundred free concerts in the streets and squares of the historic center of Aix-en-Provence in August
Musique dans la Rue is a free music festival held annually in late August in the historic center of Aix-en-Provence. Organized by the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud and the City of Aix, this summer event offers about a hundred concerts over eight days in the emblematic courtyards, squares, and chapels of the old town. The eclectic repertoire — classical, jazz, opera, tango, world music — makes it a festival accessible to all audiences.
Musique dans la Rue is a unique festival: for eight days in late August, about a hundred free concerts take over the streets, squares, courtyards, and chapels of the historic center of Aix-en-Provence. Created over fifty years ago, this summer event is organized by the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud and the City of Aix-en-Provence, making music accessible to all audiences in a spirit of sharing and conviviality.
The programming of Musique dans la Rue is distinguished by its eclecticism. The festival offers concerts covering a wide musical spectrum: classical music, jazz, opera, tango, world music, music set to poetry, symphonies, and four-hand fantasies. Each edition embraces new influences — in 2025, a touch of Argentina and tango enriched the program. This musical diversity allows everyone to find something they enjoy around a street corner or in a shaded square.
The concerts take place in six emblematic venues in the historic center of Aix-en-Provence, chosen for their architectural beauty and acoustics: the Cour Sainte-Catherine, the recently renovated Place d'Albertas, the Chapelle des Oblats, the Place des Prêcheurs which traditionally hosts the closing concert, and other heritage sites in the old town. These open-air venues or sheltered chapels offer an incomparable setting for listening to music, bathed in the golden light of Provençal summer evenings.
Musique dans la Rue is a late-summer event to be shared with family and friends. Concerts usually start at 6:30 PM, allowing spectators to enjoy the mild Aixois August evenings. Free admission to all concerts makes this festival a truly popular and accessible event, true to the mission of the Conservatoire Darius Milhaud to democratize musical practice and appreciation. With over fifty editions to its name, Musique dans la Rue has become a classic of the Aixois summer calendar, eagerly awaited each year by residents and visitors alike.
