Festival of live performances in the ruins of the Renaissance castle of La Tour d'Aigues, a jewel of the South Luberon
Les Estivales de la Tour d'Aigues are held every summer in the courtyard and spectacular ruins of the Renaissance castle of La Tour d'Aigues, one of the most impressive monuments in the Luberon. Classical music, theater, dance, and open-air concerts liven up the evenings of July and August in this exceptional setting, classified as a Historic Monument. A quality festival that celebrates heritage and performing arts at the foot of the Luberon, in a characteristic village of the Vaucluse.
Overlooking the Durance plain and the southern slope of the Grand Luberon, the Château de La Tour d'Aigues is one of the most remarkable Renaissance monuments in Provence. Built from 1560 onwards on the foundations of a medieval castrum, for Jean-Louis de Bouliers and then for the barons of Espagnet and Albertas, it was one of the most ambitious seigneurial palaces in the region: its imposing dimensions, its antique-style triumphal gateway, and its facades with pilasters and tall windows still bear witness to this today.
The castle's destiny was, however, cruel: burned down twice during the French Revolution, in 1780 and 1792, it was reduced to ruins. But ruins of striking grandeur — the three wings of the main building, the monumental gateway, the corner towers, the outbuildings — which have survived through the centuries, retaining their imposing character. The Vaucluse department, owner of the castle since the 1970s, has undertaken its progressive restoration and opened it to the public, making it a place of living culture.
Today, the castle houses a Museum of the History of the Castle and the Faiences of Provence (the faiences of La Tour d'Aigues were renowned throughout Europe in the 18th century) and hosts exhibitions, cultural events, and, in summer, the Estivales. The inner courtyard, surrounded by the ruined but still imposing walls of the castle, forms a first-rate natural amphitheater, with favorable acoustics and a setting whose majesty no concert hall can approach.
The Estivales de la Tour d'Aigues were born from the conviction that heritage must live, and that the beauty of a monument is amplified when it meets the beauty of art. Each summer, in July and August, the Vaucluse department and the municipality organize a festival of live performances in the courtyard and spaces of the castle, attracting audiences from all over the region and beyond.
The program covers several artistic disciplines. Classical and Baroque music particularly stands out: the natural acoustics of the courtyard, the stone walls that reflect and enrich the sound, and the nocturnal dimension of the concerts create exceptional listening conditions. Chamber orchestras, baroque ensembles, and recitals by renowned soloists — the Château de La Tour d'Aigues hosts concerts of a high artistic level, attracting discerning music lovers from all over Provence.
Theater also finds ideal conditions in this setting: companies perform facing the ruined walls of the castle, in a natural scenography that spares them many stage artifices. Classical plays from the French and European repertoire, contemporary creations, street theater, or musical theater performances — the variety of offerings reflects the richness of the festival.
Dance — contemporary, classical, flamenco, or world dances — dialogues with the castle's spaces for performances where choreography and architecture engage in conversation. Variety and song concerts complete the program for the most popular evenings.
La Tour d'Aigues is a town of some 4,000 inhabitants at the foot of the southern slope of the Grand Luberon, in the Pays d'Aigues. This area, less known than the northern slope of the Luberon (Gordes, Ménerbes, Bonnieux), is no less rich: characteristic villages like Ansouis (medieval castle), Cucuron (its basin-washhouse and local market), Pertuis (dynamic town), the vineyards of the Côtes du Luberon, and the olive trees that cover the slopes of the massif.
The festival is an ideal opportunity to explore this South Luberon, often overlooked in favor of the more publicized but equally charming and less crowded northern slope. Markets, wineries, olive groves, and stone villages create an authentic and relaxing landscape, which the festival allows you to discover in its highest cultural dimension.
The Estivales de La Tour d'Aigues also stand out for their accessibility and their commitment to being a festival for everyone. Part of the program is offered at moderate or free prices, especially outdoor events and weekend concerts. The castle setting is accessible to families with children, and specific activities for young audiences are regularly organized during the evenings.
The local producers' market, which accompanies some festive evenings, allows for a cultural discovery to be extended by a gastronomic exploration of the riches of the Pays d'Aigues: goat cheeses, AOC Luberon olive oils, Côtes du Luberon wines, lavender honey, and local fruits.
The 2026 edition of Les Estivales de la Tour d'Aigues will return to the courtyard of the Renaissance castle for a new season of live performances. Concerts, theater, dance, and musical evenings in this Historic Monument of the South Luberon, from early July to mid-August. A quality cultural program accessible to all in the Pays d'Aigues.
Les Estivales de La Tour d'Aigues 2026 promise a new season rich in artistic emotions in the unique setting of the Renaissance castle, a listed Historic Monument. From early July to mid-August, the castle courtyard will host a diverse program of concerts, theater, and dance performances that will make the ancient stones of the South Luberon vibrate.
The 2026 musical program will give pride of place to classical and baroque music, in perfect harmony with the Renaissance architecture of the castle. Dance will also be featured, with one or two choreographic evenings that will dialogue with the mineral beauty of the castle.
Free or reduced-price events will be scheduled at the beginning of the season and for families, to make the festival accessible to as many people as possible. Full program available from May 2026 on the website of the Vaucluse Department and at the Pays d'Aigues Tourist Office.
