Classical and lyrical music festival in the castles and villages of the Luberon, early August
The Durance Luberon Festival is a summer event for classical and lyrical music held in early August in the most beautiful heritage sites of the Durance and Luberon region. Castles, inner courtyards, historic gardens, and village squares host orchestral concerts, recitals, operas, and chamber music in an exceptional setting. Since 1997, the festival has combined musical excellence with the beauty of the Provençal landscapes between Pertuis, Mirabeau, La Tour d'Aigues, and Peyrolles.
Born in 1997, the Durance Luberon Festival has built a solid reputation in the landscape of classical music festivals in Provence. Every early August, for about fifteen days, the festival takes over the most remarkable heritage sites in the Durance and Luberon region: castles, historic gardens, inner courtyards, chapels, and village squares are transformed into open-air concert halls, combining musical excellence with the magic of the places.
The festival draws its name and identity from the Durance, a Provençal river that flows down from the Alps to cross the Luberon before joining the Rhône, and from the Luberon, a limestone massif classified as a Regional Natural Park, an emblem of Provence. Between these two geographies lies a territory of historic villages and castles, which form the natural backdrop for the concerts.
The program of the Durance Luberon Festival blends the great classical repertoire, opera, chamber music, and more original proposals. The 28th edition in 2025 perfectly illustrated this deliberate eclecticism, notably featuring:
This ability to combine the grand lyrical repertoire with intimate chamber music, monumental opera with traditional music, is one of the festival''s hallmarks. It refuses restrictive labels to offer its audience diverse musical experiences.
The venues are at the heart of the Durance Luberon Festival's identity. Each chosen site adds an extra dimension to the music:
The Château de La Tour d'Aigues, whose magnificent ruins are one of Provence's most impressive Renaissance ensembles, offers a spectacular setting for large ensembles. Its ruins, illuminated by the summer evening light, create a unique atmosphere. The Château de Mirabeau, overlooking the Durance from its high hill, is the ideal location for ApérOpéras, where singers mingle with the audience over a drink. Peyrolles-en-Provence and its royal castle complete the festival's geography.
Other more intimate villages and sites — Lauris, Cadenet, Pertuis — host chamber concerts and recitals that touch the audience through their proximity to the artists. In these villages, music is experienced differently: without an orchestra pit or institutional distance, simply musicians and their audience in the soft Provençal night.
The Durance Luberon Festival is part of the great Provençal tradition of open-air opera, made famous worldwide by the Chorégies d'Orange. The natural acoustics of the festival's carefully selected venues allow for complete operas or lyrical programs to be presented under satisfactory musical conditions.
The experience of an opera or a classical concert in the open air in a Provençal castle, with the warmth of the summer night, the stars above the stage, and the scent of lavender in the air, is a total sensory experience that goes beyond mere listening. It is this magic that the Durance Luberon Festival has cultivated for nearly thirty years.
The Durance Luberon Festival is deeply rooted in its territory. It contributes to the cultural life of the Luberon villages, animates castles that would otherwise be silent in summer, and attracts audiences from all over the PACA region and beyond. Partnerships with local authorities — municipalities, the Communauté du Pays d'Aix, the Département du Vaucluse — demonstrate the elected officials' recognition of the festival's structuring role in the territory's cultural attractiveness.
The programmed artists — soloists, conductors, chamber ensembles — appreciate the special working conditions offered by the festival: the beauty of the sites, the warmth of the Provençal welcome, and the quality audience that has followed the festival for many years.
The Durance Luberon Festival returns in early August 2026 for its 29th edition in the castles and villages of the Luberon. Classical music, opera, and chamber music in exceptional heritage sites. Program on festival-durance-luberon.com.
