Professional medieval reenactments, fantastic creatures, and historical encampments in the heart of the Var
The Médiévales de Brignoles immerse the capital of Provence Verte in the enchanting world of the Middle Ages every summer. Professional historical reenactment companies, fantastic creatures, knightly combat, medieval encampments, artisan crafts, and ancient music invade the historic heart of Brignoles for a weekend of celebration and time travel, accessible to the whole family.
Every summer, the town of Brignoles transforms into a medieval city for an exceptional weekend. The Médiévales de Brignoles are one of the most popular historical events in the Var department, attracting thousands of visitors from across the PACA region and beyond to experience a total immersion in the world of the Middle Ages.
Brignoles is a town steeped in history, a former residence of the Counts of Provence and the capital of Provence Verte. Its historic center, with its Saint-Sauveur Cathedral, medieval alleys, the Musée du Pays Brignolais (housed in the former Palace of the Counts of Provence), and its partially preserved ramparts, provides an authentic and striking setting for the medieval festivities. The Pierre-Sainte-Marie, the Tour des Comtes, and the old fountains contribute to the unique atmosphere of a city that carries centuries of Provençal history within it.
The quality of the Médiévales de Brignoles relies on the use of professional historical reenactment companies, specializing in various facets of medieval life. These experienced troupes bring historical rigor and a level of spectacle that distinguishes the festival from amateur entertainment. Visitors can witness:
One of the originalities of the Médiévales de Brignoles is the integration of fantastic creatures and a slightly whimsical universe alongside historical reenactments. Dragons, fairies, elves, and other imaginary beings mingle with knights and troubadours, adding a magical and playful dimension that particularly delights young visitors. This hybrid approach – between serious history and unbridled imagination – is one of the keys to the festival's success with families.
The medieval encampments set up in and around the historic center are one of the festival's highlights. Members of the reenactment companies meticulously recreate the living conditions of the Middle Ages: period tents and pavilions, antique furniture and utensils, clothing and military equipment, and period food and crafts. Visitors can enter the encampments, chat with the reenactors, touch the armor and weapons, and understand how men and women lived in the 13th or 14th century.
The Médiévales de Brignoles are above all a popular celebration, accessible to all audiences and particularly suitable for families with children. The activities are designed to spark the curiosity and imagination of the youngest visitors: medieval games, calligraphy workshops, dressing up in period costumes, and treasure hunts in the old town's alleys. The festival is organized in partnership with the Brignoles Town Hall and the Provence Verte Tourist Office, who actively support this event that has become emblematic of the town's cultural identity.
The Médiévales de Brignoles 2026 will take place on August 15 and 16, 2026, during the Assumption Day weekend. Professional historical reenactment companies, fantastic creatures, equestrian jousts, medieval encampments, and artisan crafts will take over the historic center of Brignoles for two days of celebration and time travel.
The Médiévales de Brignoles 2026 will be held on August 15 and 16, 2026, taking advantage of the Assumption Day weekend to once again gather thousands of visitors in the historic center of the capital of Provence Verte. This traditional summer event in Brignoles promises to be even richer and more ambitious than previous editions.
The historic center of Brignoles will once again be transformed into a living medieval city, with its professional companies setting up their encampments in the cobbled streets, its artisans recreating ancestral crafts, its musicians filling the air with ancient instruments, and its knights competing in memorable jousts. Fantastic creatures – dragons, fairies, mythical beings – will contribute to the enchanting atmosphere that makes the Brignoles Médiévales so successful and unique.
The detailed program, including the names of the invited companies and the show schedule, will be announced by the Town of Brignoles in the weeks leading up to the event. Families with children will, as every year, find numerous activities suitable for all ages, in a festive and educational spirit that reconciles fun and culture.
