The National Day in Van Gogh's village, on the banks of the Oise
Auvers-sur-Oise (95430) is a village in the Val-d'Oise, world-renowned for its connection to Impressionist and Post-Impressionist painters. It was here that Vincent van Gogh spent the last weeks of his life in 1890, painting over 70 works, including the famous Wheatfield with Crows and The Church at Auvers-sur-Oise. Paul Cézanne, Charles-François Daubigny, and many other artists also stayed and worked in Auvers, making this village a major site of world artistic heritage.
With its approximately 7,000 inhabitants, Auvers-sur-Oise is a human-sized commune that attracts many visitors each year who come to follow in the footsteps of the Impressionists. The historical fabric of the village, with its stone houses, tree-lined streets, and views of the Oise, has been largely preserved, offering a timeless atmosphere.
The National Day of July 14th takes on a special flavor in Auvers-sur-Oise. Celebrating the Republic in this village where art and nature met in the 19th century to give birth to Impressionism is also celebrating the creative freedom and artistic genius that are at the heart of French culture. The fireworks illuminate the sky above the same fields and hills that Van Gogh painted, creating a spectacle of particular beauty in this historic setting.
The inhabitants of Auvers-sur-Oise and the many tourists present during the summer season gather on the banks of the Oise or in the village's green spaces to witness this nocturnal show. The characteristic summer light of the Oise valley, the light that the Impressionists sought to capture on their canvases, gives the spectacle an extra dimension.
In addition to the fireworks, the July 14th festivities in Auvers-sur-Oise include popular entertainment that blends attachment to republican traditions with the village's unique character. Artistic walks may be offered related to the Impressionist heritage, associative stands animate the village squares, and local restaurants benefit from the influx of visitors.
The popular ball that follows the fireworks perpetuates the republican tradition while adding Auvers' special touch: a celebration in a setting that the world's greatest painters deemed worthy of their masterpieces. Residents and visitors mingle on the dance floor for a memorable evening in the heart of the Val-d'Oise.
Summer in Auvers-sur-Oise is a particularly lively season, with many tourists and cultural events related to the Impressionist heritage. The Maison de Van Gogh, the Maison Daubigny, the Château d'Auvers, and the numerous reproductions of paintings displayed throughout the village attract visitors from all over the world. The National Day is part of this dynamic summer context and benefits from the presence of these visitors who discover French republican traditions in one of the most emblematic sites of world art.
