Pastel Night: Albi's Celebration of Light and Catalan Culture

Pastel Night is one of the must-see events of spring in Albi. Every year at the end of May, the episcopal city of Albi adorns itself with flowers and lights to celebrate the bonds that have united it with its twin city Girona, in Catalonia, for over forty years. This entirely free evening brings together local artists, Occitan troupes, and Catalan delegations in a festive and luminous route stretching from the Grand Théâtre des Cordeliers to the Pont Vieux.

A Flowery and Luminous Route Through the Old Town

Inspired by the famous Girona Flower Festival, the Pastel Night route is marked by hundreds of flowers and light installations that enhance the medieval alleys, squares, and monuments of the UNESCO World Heritage historic center. Starting at 5 PM, over 20 artistic proposals are freely accessible: dance, music, visual arts, storytelling, mini-organ concerts in the Saint-Salvi church, musical parades, and theatrical performances.

Catalan Culture in the Spotlight

The 14th edition in 2025, themed around the 40th anniversary of the Albi-Girona twinning, welcomed nearly 200 Catalan guests who came to share their living heritage. On the program: the traditional stick dance (bastoners) in the Grand Théâtre square from 7 PM, processional giants parading through the streets starting at 7 PM, and brass bands and drumlines enlivening the route from 7 PM to 10:45 PM.

The Castells—spectacular Catalan human towers, inscribed on UNESCO's Intangible Cultural Heritage list—are presented four times during the evening: at 8 PM and 10 PM in Place de la Pile, and at 9 PM and 10:30 PM on the Esplanade des Cordeliers. These impressive performances, by expert Catalan colles (teams), always draw hundreds of captivated spectators.

Live Performances and Musical Heritage

Music is omnipresent throughout the evening. Mini-organ concerts resonate in the Saint-Salvi church at 8 PM, 9 PM, 10 PM, and 11 PM, while the baroque choir and early music ensembles recall Albi's cultural and heritage vocation. The Toulouse-Lautrec museum hosts original stage performances in its salons.

A Grand Finale Show

The evening concludes at 11 PM in Place Sainte-Cécile, at the foot of the majestic Gothic cathedral, with a spectacular night show by Les Plasticiens Volants. This internationally renowned collective presents "Voyage dans l'Absurdie" (Journey into Absurdity), a poetic and immersive visual tale inspired by Gulliver's Travels, blending giant inflatable structures, light effects, and music. An enchanting conclusion to this exceptional night.

Free and Accessible to All

All Pastel Night activities are free and open to the public. The Albi Tourist Office, located at 42 rue Mariès, remains open until 9 PM to assist visitors. The entire route takes place in the pedestrian streets of the medieval center, accessible to people with reduced mobility on most sections.

Pastel Night — edition 2026

The 15th edition of Pastel Night is expected at the end of May 2026 in Albi, continuing the tradition of the flowery and luminous route in the historic center of the episcopal city. Live performances, street arts, music, Catalan Castells, and a grand night show are on the program for this entirely free evening.

15th Pastel Night — Spring 2026

The 15th edition of Pastel Night is expected in Albi at the end of May 2026, perpetuating the tradition of a unique spring evening blending flowers, lights, and Catalan culture in the medieval heart of the UNESCO-listed episcopal city.

True to its spirit, Pastel Night 2026 will offer a flowery and luminous route between the Grand Théâtre des Cordeliers and the Pont Vieux, punctuated by free-access artistic proposals: traditional dances, festive brass bands, street performances, musical acts, and visual arts. The Castells—Catalan human towers—will once again be featured, along with a grand night show in Place Sainte-Cécile. The entire event remains free of charge, open to all audiences.
