About Scènes d'Automne

Every year in September, the Amis du Théâtre d'Auxerre organize Scènes d'Automne, an amateur theatre festival that brings together about ten companies from the Yonne region and neighboring departments. For two days, the Théâtre d'Auxerre opens its doors to the general public with a completely free program, just before the official season opens. A unique moment of conviviality that showcases the richness of the Burgundian amateur theatre scene.

Scènes d'Automne, the cradle of Auxerre's amateur theatre

Scènes d'Automne was born in 2013 on the initiative of the Amis du Théâtre d'Auxerre, a partner association of the Théâtre d'Auxerre — a National Interest Conventioned Stage. Since their creation, these amateur theatre meetings have become an unmissable event of the cultural season in Auxerre, offering a true showcase for amateur theatre in the region every autumn.

An open and free festival

The philosophy of Scènes d'Automne is based on two fundamental pillars: free access and accessibility. All performances are free to attend, subject to availability, allowing a large and diverse audience to discover theatre without financial constraints. This deliberate choice contributes to democratizing access to live culture in Burgundy.

Companies from all over the region

Each edition brings together between eight and ten amateur companies from the Yonne and surrounding departments. Troupes from Auxerre, Avallon, Sens, Semur-en-Auxois, Moutiers-en-Puisaye, Maillot, and Seine-et-Marne take turns on the stage of the Théâtre d'Auxerre, offering short or long plays, comedies or dramas, classical or contemporary.

  • 8 to 10 amateur companies per edition
  • Performances from 45 to 90 minutes depending on the companies
  • 30-minute intermissions between each performance
  • Bar open throughout the festival
  • Free entry subject to availability

A varied program over two days

The festival takes place over two consecutive days, usually the weekend before the official opening of the Théâtre d'Auxerre season. The performances, of varying lengths, run continuously from afternoon to evening, offering the public the opportunity to chain discoveries or choose the performances that appeal to them most.

A tradition rooted in Auxerre's cultural life

Over the years, Scènes d'Automne has built a solid reputation. The twelfth edition in 2024 testifies to the loyalty of the audience and the commitment of the participating companies. The festival plays an essential role in the cultural fabric of the Yonne: it supports amateur practices, fosters exchanges between companies, and provides a valuable first contact between the city of Auxerre and its theatre for many new spectators.

Scènes d'Automne also aligns with the mission of the Amis du Théâtre, who work year-round to bring the people of the Yonne closer to professional and amateur performing arts, in a spirit of sharing and enthusiasm.

Scènes d'Automne — edition 2026

The fourteenth edition of Scènes d'Automne will take place in September 2026 at the Théâtre d'Auxerre. Organized by the Amis du Théâtre d'Auxerre, these amateur theatre meetings will bring together a new selection of regional companies for two days of free performances, just before the official season opens.

2026 Edition – Fourteenth amateur theatre meeting

The Scènes d'Automne 2026 return in September to the Théâtre d'Auxerre for a new festive and free edition. The Amis du Théâtre d'Auxerre have selected about ten amateur companies from the Yonne and neighboring departments to present their performances over two days.

As every year, the final program and the list of participating companies will be announced before the festival. This autumn event is the ideal opportunity to (re)discover theatre in a welcoming setting without ticketing constraints.
